Unsheltered Voices- Community Ministry Intern

Contract position from August 15th, 2020 through June 30, 2021

(avg 7-12 hours per week dependent on funding)

The Unsheltered Voices Community Organizing Project is a homeless initiative by the Universalist Unitarian Church of Corpus Christi, (U2C3). The U2C3 Board of trustees seeks to contract a Community Ministry Intern to work closely with the Social Justice Team, the Congregation, the Homeless Community, Coastal Bend Neighborhood Empowerment, (CBNE), and the newly formed ABCD Corpus Christi Collaboration to train, coach and support the congregation to partner with leaders of a local homeless community; coaching them to organize around their shared dreams and collective strengths.

U2C3 seeks to develop the capacity of people experiencing homelessness and the communities where homelessness is a risk and support them to organize as a community. U2C3 will use the evidence-based Asset Based Community Development model to collaborate with and empower persons experiencing homelessness.

Essential Job Functions:

Foster and maintain community relationships between U2C3 Social Justice Team, local homeless service providers, local government and private-sector collaborators to amplify community efforts; attend meetings as necessary to provide partners with updated project information.

Work closely with the U2C3 social justice team and members of the homeless community to build and implement capacity-building trainings based on Asset Based Community Development; facilitate weekly meetings online or in person when conditions permit safe face to face meetings.

Create activities and long-term partnerships with members of the Unitarian Universalist Church of Corpus Christi, persons experiencing homelessness, the City of Corpus Christi Housing and Homeless Services department, and other key community stakeholders to build relationships of concern and reciprocity.

Develop volunteers and members of the homeless community to form a listening team and complete 50 conversational surveys within the homeless community identifying areas that persons in the homeless community have interest and energy around changing.

Document survey responses in google docs and sheets.

Maps community strengths and creates a responsive strategy to local problems with a focus on collaborative solutions;

a. Facilitate reporting of survey results to U2C3, the City of Corpus Christi Department of Housing and Homelessness, Coastal Bend Neighborhood Empowerment, and members of the homeless community upon completion.

b. Coach members of the homeless community to identify the action items with the strongest support that can be initiated within the community. Action plans will identify members of the homeless community as leaders and include sign in sheets that demonstrate consistent participation and engagement of the homeless community in the action team process.

Lead discussion with the Action Team leaders to determine what involvement in the larger community will benefit the current action plans and facility community connections identified by the team.

Provide weekly activity reports for the newsletter and social media describing activities, celebrating success and inviting participation from the congregation.

Collect stories, photos, sign in sheets, data and supporting documentation to use in end of year report on grant activities.

Participates in supervision meetings as necessary to maintain communication regarding progress and challenges with Rev. Christina Hockman. May utilize set office hours at Unitarian Universalist Church of Corpus Christi to complete work as coordinated with supervisor and as the building is available.

QUALIFICATIONS

Undergraduate degree and/or Masters level coursework in Social Work, Sustainable and Community Development, Social Education, Sociology, Psychology, Social Justice, Ministry or another related field.

6+ months paid or volunteer experience in a community program implementing Asset Based Community Development.

Ability to work irregular hours, including days, evenings, and weekends depending on the needs of the engagement community.

Cultural sensitivity including Ability to articulate the effects of privilege and the dynamics of race, power, and poverty.ยท

Experience working with marginalized populations, including homeless persons.

Exceptional verbal, written and presentation skills.

Ability to facilitate small group trainings and discussions.

Demonstrated leadership and an interest in interfaith social justice through education, volunteer or work experience

Experience with Google suite tools (Gmail, Google Drive, Google Docs/Forms/Sheets, Google calendar, and ability to use your personal computer for work and communication.

Ability to work on-site in outdoor conditions, and to coordinate remote meetings.
