The ISS Associate Program Scientist supports Research Integration initiatives that are related to ISS science, research, and technology initiatives, including review and revision of ISS Science policy and communications.

What You'll Be Doing

In this role you will be required to provide expertise to ensure integration of research for execution on the ISS. This position is directed toward the understanding of the effects of space flight on biological or physiological processes in living organisms. The position involves planning and coordinating programs in research, development, and utilization of ground and space-based platforms. You will provide leadership in the International Space Station Program, coordinating with research sponsors, Principal Investigators and Payload Developers; ultimately advocating for the scientific integrity of the Program.

The ISS Associate Program Scientist, works with the Chief Scientist, to:

  • Support the ISS Chief Scientist in providing research priority guidance regarding NASA payloads to personnel within the ISS Research Integration Office during strategic and tactical planning and real-time operations.
  • Represent the opportunities and limitations of ISS resources, enhancing international collaboration to scientific working groups such as the International Space Life Sciences Working Group.
  • Promote and publicize ISS research results and plans at external scientific and technical conferences, press conferences, in written publications, and other public venues; implement science communication activities by approving increment messaging products and themes.
  • In the absence of the ISS Chief Scientist, represent the research community in ISS configuration management and control processes through membership on the Space Station Program Control Board and the Research Integration Control Board as required to provide research impact assessments.
  • Work with internal and external entities to develop and advocate policy, which will enhance research on ISS in support of ISS strategic goals.
  • Carry out functions of the ISS Chief Scientist in their absence.
  • Serve as Chair of the Program Science Forum - United States
  • Serves as a top technical expert and consultant in his/her field of expertise for the entire NASA and ISS communities, as well as national and international industry, governmental and academic partners.
  • Manages complex and extensive scientific programs of critical importance to the agency that impact the ongoing and future success of ISS.
  • Keeps abreast of developments in applicable science and technology, including interacting with relevant scientific communities and science advisory bodies.
  • Serves as an advisory scientific authority in the research integration organization. In this capacity, serves as a consultant to high level managers within the Agency and to other agencies, government organizations and international partners on the full range of science program matters that arise. Collaborates with national and international partners on research and development opportunities.


What You Need to be Successful

Minimum Requirements:
  • Life and/or Physical Sciences - terminal degree required.
  • Proven experience in Project management, Flight science integration, Flight operations, Systems engineering, Business development, and Budgeting
  • Knowledge of partnership development/customer relations
  • Expertise in flight hardware/software development
  • 10+ years' working in human spaceflight matters, both developmental and operational
  • Understanding and experience working Government Furnished Equipment (GFE) programs, initiatives, and requirements
  • Knowledge of space flight certification processes to ensure performance and safety requirements are met
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; ability to develop and clearly communicate complex information
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills
  • Independent and self-motivated; proactive ability to learn on the job and serve as the primary interface to the customer
  • Ability to work within a team environment, where the team is distributed across multiple NASA Centers, Contractors and Private Industry
  • Ability to identify and communicate concerns to leadership in a diplomatic manner
  • This position may require the ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the US government. U.S citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

  • 12+ years' experience within NASA or working on programs supporting NASA Scientific Research
  • Advanced degree (doctoral or graduate) from an accredited program in a technical discipline
  • Understanding of specific NASA human spaceflight topics and research
  • Extensive project management expertise
  • Excellent presentation skills
