JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIESLaboratory Research Functions, under supervision, in the design and initiation of research experiments. These experiments include, but are not limited to, DNA/RNA isolation from human plasma, tumor tissues and cell lines, flow cytometry, PCR, RT-PCR, Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, protein purification, and other approaches.Laboratory Support, Record Keeping and Data Collection -Assists with basic laboratory techniques and in preparation of media solutions, buffers and reagents.-Reads literature and confers with superiors regarding new procedures and modifies them according to the needs of the project.Keep ample stock of supplies on handOrder reagents and materials when needed.-Know the procedure for obtaining repair or maintenance for lab equipment-Prepare stock solutions-Perform laboratory maintenance, such as cleaningWork closely with other staff members -Maintain good working relationship with other team members-Explain to staff members the scientific protocols currently being employed in the laboratory - .Receive verbal and/or written instructions from principal investigator on standards and specialized lab safety procedures.Attend annual safety courses required by MDA and other agencies. Handle, store, and dispose of radioactive isotopes, chemically hazardous materials, and bio hazardous materials in procedure specified to meet MDA safety guidelines.Follow manufacturer's guidelines regarding the handling and maintenance of all lab equipment. Have working knowledge of equipment operation manuals and procedure manuals whenever necessary.Monitor work flow as it pertains to the need for supplies, equipment maintenance, and preparing stock solutionsHandle all aspects of the mouse experiments -Monitor the animals on a regular basis-Conduct experiments by injecting cancer cells into animals, monitoring for toxicity and performing autopsies.-Perform staining and flow cytometry assays of immune cells from tissues harvested from autopsiesTissue Culture -Maintain and establish culture of human and murine cells, which require rigorous sterile techniques. Observe and identify cell changes under the microscope, determine cell counts and cell viability.-Prepare sterile media and solutions.-Purify cells by various methods and monitor cells for proliferation and activation by standard laboratory methods.-Monitor supplies, order and store tissue culture supplies to ensure efficient functioning.-Prepare cells for cryogenic storage and keep them organized and updated on the laboratory inventoried cell stock list.-The above requires using the microscope for prolonged periods, working for prolonged periods with hands extended under a flow hood and lifting cases (<50lbs).Other duties as assigned Bachelor's degree, major course work in one of the basic sciences.
