Job SummaryUnder immediate supervision, is responsible for collection of commercial and residential refuse on assigned routes. Disposes of garbage, recyclables, brush and other materials at appropriate City disposal sites. Working conditions are primarily outside with frequent exposure to temperature extremes, dust; damp/wet surfaces, and high noise level. Exercises no supervision.Work Location1800 Wurzbach Parkway Work Schedule7:45 a.m. - 5:30 p.m.; Tuesday - Friday & Saturday 7:45 a.m. -12:45 p.m. Essential Job FunctionsPicks up, carries, and empties garbage cans, recycling bins and brush into trucks without damage to containers, which includes frequently lifting and carrying bins and materials weighing 40 pounds.

Picks up debris and other refuse and places in proper collection vehicle.

Returns garbage cans and recycling bins to their original location.

Operates mechanism for loading and dumping into collection vehicle.

Directs driver in backing truck at all times.

Provides customer service by answering questions from the general public.

Ensures that safety apparel is worn and safety practices and procedures are followed.

Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job RequirementsSix (6) months of experience in the performance of manual labor.

Valid Class 'C' Texas Driver's License.

Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

Applicants selected for employment with the City of San Antonio in this position must receive satisfactory results from pre-employment drug testing and background checks. If required for the position, a physical, motor vehicle record evaluation, and additional background checks may be conducted.

Knowledge of proper lifting techniques and practices.

Ability to learn to drive a large commercial vehicle.

Ability to learn City streets.

Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods.
