The Boeing Company is seeking an experienced Mid-Level Software Engineer - Kernel Developer (Virtual) to join our kernel development team. This position requires a deep understanding of operating system technologies, kernel internals, and modern processor architectures. As part of the kernel development team, you will work to deliver safety-critical kernels for use across The Boeing Company's entire product portfolio.

This position requires the candidate to have a full-stack mindset and be involved in continuous improvement of the software development environment and tools utilized by the kernel development team.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Develops, documents and maintains reusable architectures, requirements, algorithms, interfaces and designs for kernel software.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert for kernel internals, system-specific issues, and processes and regulations.
  • Creates and organizes a well-defined, estimated and prioritized set of initiatives, epics and stories to maintain a robust backlog for time-phasing and planning.
  • Participates in daily scrums, using agile practices, to communicate clearly and openly on incremental progress and to inform the team of any help needed on impediments and roadblocks and suggest timely remedies for common ailments during retrospections.


This position has been identified as a virtual opportunity and does not require applicants to live in Mesa, Arizona.

The position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a "US Person" as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. "US Person" includes , lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
  • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in Engineering, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics or Chemistry
  • 2+ years of experience developing custom device drivers and kernel modules for the Linux operating systems
  • 2+ years of experience with and supporting systems with Linux Operating System (OS)


Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
  • 2+ years of experience with C/C coding or java/python script development
  • Experience with open source projects and collaborations
  • Real-time software development experience
  • Experience with modern processor architectures
  • Experience with total software development lifecycle
  • Experience with UNIX systems
  • Experience with development of Continuous Integration (CI) / Continuous Deployment (CD) pipelines
  • Experience creating hermetic builds
  • Configuration management of diverse systems experience
  • Safety-Critical / FAA software certification experience
  • Experience with Product-Line Engineering
  • Experience with Real Time Operating Systems (RTOS)
  • Contributions to open source projects
  • Member of an Agile development team


Typical Education/Experience:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master+3 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Summary pay range min-max: $95,000- $140,000
