In the U.S.; IRC provides assistance to refugees resettling here through 25 offices operating in 16 states. IRC resettles approximately 11,000 refugees per year and provides numerous program services to assist the refugee from their arrival through citizenship. The IRC in Salt Lake City opened it office in 1994, and provides resettlement services through extended case management to newly arrived refugees for up to 24-months as well as over twenty different programs to educate and empower refugees. Job Overview:The AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associate program offers individuals the opportunity to become engaged in a community through the International Rescue Committee in Salt Lake City for 10 weeks during the summer, June 15 – August 21, 2020. While not a job, Summer Associates receive: A living allowance for the time served ($1040 a month). Choice between a Segal AmeriCorps Education Award ($1,289.95) or an end-of-service summer stipend. Only those Summer Associates who successfully complete their full term of service are eligible to receive the education award or end-of-service summer stipend.IRC SLC’s Employment Team provides case managed employment services including job readiness training, assistance with applications, interviews and new hire paperwork, and post-placement follow-ups to ensure that clients are transitioning well to working in the American employment system.Newly arrived refugees in the United States face many barriers to employment, including not being familiar with the job search and interview process in the United States as well as workplace expectations regarding punctuality, language, transportation, workplace culture, and at times, even personal hygiene.Major Responsibilities:The IRC SLC Employment Program assists newly arrived refugees obtain and maintain gainful employment. As part of this program, IRC SLC follows-up with refugee clients and their respective employers after a client is hired to ensure that the new hire is doing well and to address any questions or concerns from either the client or the employer.Our goal is to follow-up with both the client and their employer within 2 weeks after the client is hired. However frequently follow-up is only conducted with the client or with the employer but not both.· Restructure how follow-ups are conducted after a refugee client is employed to ensure that both the employer and the client are contacted.

To see what challenges or issues may be present and work to overcome them

Obtain verification of employment through a form and/or check stubs to show that clients are paid and are paying taxes

To report successes that may be shared with other IRC offices, donors and grant providers

· Pilot the restructured program with clients and employers and adjust as necessary.· Assist clients with all other aspects of job search, placement, and post-placement activities.Qualifications

Previous experience working with refugee populations is preferred

Ability to communicate in English; fluency in Swahili, Kinyarwanda, French, Dari/Farsi, is helpful

Adhere to IRC workplace policies & dress code

Outgoing & independent; able to accomplish tasks efficiently and in a timely manner

Ability to drive, must have valid driver’s license and auto insurance
