Our trip staff teaches campers how to be confident and successful in the out-of-doors from completing a hike to being a good steward of the environment and other important life lessons. If you are an outdoor enthusiast with a passion and strong experience for hiking, this is the position for you. Canoeing experience is beneficial.
Job Description
Responsible for leading hiking trips for campers aged 7 -17 (occasional responsibility for younger children)
Hiking 4-5 days per week in the mountains of Maine and New Hampshire
Responsible for organizing, promoting and packing trips
Responsible for logistics, preparing food and safety on trips
Write trip reports in a timely manner
Work directly with the Head of Trips
Maintaining equipment and organizing the Trip Shed
Ability to drive a 12-passenger van for short trips and longer (up to 6 hours)
STAFF TRAINING:
Staff training is ongoing throughout the summer at Arcadia. All Counselors will:
Attend Staff Orientation to become familiar with the Camp culture, develop teaching strategies set up your activity and learn about lodge living.
Attend weekly Department meetings and Unit Meetings share information and utilize this information
Meet on a regular basis with your Department Head and Unit Coordinator to review performance and assess successes and failures.
Relationships
Trips counselors work directly with the Head of Trips. You will also have direct relationships with the other trips staff, Campcraft, Canoeing and other staff members on trips. Lodge and Non-lodge counselors are directly supervised by a Unit Coordination/Head and work with a co-counselor and other counselors in the Unit. All staff are under the direction of the Directors and the administrative team.
Physical Aspects of the Position
Ability to communicate and work with groups participating (age and skill levels) and provide necessary instruction to campers and staff.
Ability to observe camper behavior, assess its appropriateness, enforce appropriate safety regulations and emergency procedures, and apply appropriate behavior-management techniques.

Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
Physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid. Must be able to assist campers in an emergency (fire, evacuation, illness, or injury) and possess strength and endurance required to maintain constant supervision of campers.
Physical ability to hike daily from 3 10 miles per day ( equivalent of running 4-5 miles daily)
Ability to paddle in a canoe for approximately 12 miles in 2 days
Ability to lift and carry a pack of up to 50 lbs.
Ability to perform job responsibilities during daylight and nighttime hours.
COMPENSATION PACKAGE:
Our compensation package is based on education, experience and length of contract. It includes:
Cash salary for the number of weeks you are contracted
Travel allowance (non-taxable) provided at the end of your contract
Room and Board for the duration of your contract
