Spanish Speaking Outreach Position with UVM Extension Vermont Migrant Education Program (MEP) and Bridges to Health
Official Title: Regional Coordinator
REGION OF WORK:
Northeast Kingdom, VT - Orleans, Essex, Caledonia, and part of Lamoille & Orange Counties. Strong preference given to applicants who live within the region of work.
SCOPE OF ACTIVITY: To work with the farm worker community, farm employers, school districts, local and state migrant program offices, health agencies, community volunteers and other relevant partners within the geographic area to assure prompt identification of eligible migrant children and youth and to ensure access to health care and supplemental educational services for the migrant farmworker population. This position works in collaboration with the Leadership Team and other Regional Coordinators
QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum Associates Degree and up to two years of related experience required
Bilingual Spanish/English, Conversational & Written ability in both languages a must
Experience with rural farm families and/or disadvantaged populations
Working knowledge of the public school system in Vermont
Working knowledge of Vermont health care system
Comfortable with technology; GPS systems, instant messaging & other various electronic tools
Effective organizational, communication and computer skills
Effective interviewing skills
Ability to work flexible, nontraditional hours a must
Ability to work independently and as part of a regional, and statewide team
Pass Criminal Background check
Valid drivers license and ability to travel extensively to work sites, staff meetings, etc.
BASIC JOB OVERVIEW:
This is a field position. Individual will work out of their home and spends the majority of their time on the road visiting farms, schools, community agencies working with MEP students and families.
This individual will recruit and identify all eligible migrant children and youth (including youth not currently enrolled in school) between ages 0-22 years residing within their designated regional recruitment territory, determine eligibility based on federal eligibility regulations and promptly submit necessary documentation for all enrolled students.
This individual will orient participants to the range of MEP and community services available, and coordinate with the Leadership Team to assist with access to those services. They build rapport with participants and connect to opportunities for pragmatic learning centered on participants needs. They encourage participants to develop their skills and seek new knowledge, and they make recommendations to Coordinators for continued service based on participant interest, progress, readiness, and availability.
This individual will coordinate health care services for migrant farmworkers in his/her region, distribute health care access information to farmers and farmworkers and develop a working relationship with area health care centers and providers as well as support and recruit health access volunteers.
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Temporary Wage Position, $15.50/hour; mileage reimbursement. Position does not qualify for full university benefit plan.
Hours: 35-40 hrs/wk includes MEP Recruiter/Service Coordination 30+/- & Migrant Health Promoter 10+/-
