Maintenance Technician (Bristol)

The A. Johnson Co., LLC in Bristol is looking for a maintenance person to be part of our team. Due to a retirement pending in a few years there is a position open for a skilled maintenance person to work on machinery everywhere at our location. We operate a lumber mill, processing primarily hardwood lumber, and also two lumber sorters, 4 planers, 10 dry kilns and a variety of other machinery. We also have a retail operation. An ideal candidate will have experience with hydraulic and pneumatic systems and have some familiarity with electrical controls and three phase motors. Experience in maintaining and repairing sawmill production equipment is desirable but is not required. Mechanical and diagnostic skills are the foundation you would need and we can teach you the rest.

You must be physically fit and able to both lift and push/pull 50 pounds regularly throughout the day. You must be able to work over your head or on items at floor level as well as standing on your feet for long periods of time. The working environment of often loud, so hearing protection will be a normal part of daily life and also safety glasses and steel toe shoes. Tasks vary widely throughout the day, so every day tends to be different. Some tasks are routine maintenance items to promote long machine life, while breakdowns set off a whole different chain of events. Part of the job is watching and listening to machinery as production goes on, and as maintenance is being performed, to find problems while they are small problems.

Hours are Mon-Friday 6:00 am-5:00 pm. Friday afternoons are very important for doing maintenance from noon to 5:00 to maintain productivity. We often do maintenance one Saturday morning per month. Lunch is taken during production time to be available during the noon shutdown. Taking some time off during the normal production week to make up for working Friday afternoon and the occasional Saturday morning is fine. In our experience close to 50 hours per week will be needed to keep machinery running well and occasionally more hours might be needed if a major upgrade is being installed or a major breakdown occurs.

We offer competitive wages, health insurance, a uniform package, a 401K plan with an employer match and other benefits.
