Boeing's Sustainability & Future Mobility (S&FM) Team is driving research and technology development in order to support the success of Boeing's commitment to enable the industry to get to net zero carbon emissions by 2050. We are a Boeing Research and Technology team responsible for several significant technology development projects as well as an integration point for many ongoing technology development efforts across Boeing that will help reduce the industry's impact to climate change.

One of the S&FM team's responsibilities is development of Boeing's Cascade capability. Cascade is an interactive website that allows the user to visualize the commercial aviation sector's flight map and filter that by region, aircraft type, airline, or even arrival and destination airports. The user can then see the industries current CO2 emissions and energy usage, quantify its environmental impact, and interactively assess potential future sustainability strategies (fleet renewal, operational efficiency, renewable energy, and advanced technology).

The S&FM team is currently looking for a Cascade Modeling Engineer - Sustainability & Future Mobility (Lead or Senior) to join their team at one of several locations and support the development of Cascade. These locations are: El Segundo, CA, Huntington Beach, CA, Long Beach, CA, Seal Beach, CA, Berkeley, MO, Arlington, VA, Manassas, VA, Mesa, AZ, Oklahoma City, OK, Huntsville, AL, North Charleston, SC, or Cambridge, MA.

This role will be responsible for defining modeling architecture, delivery of engineering models into the software development process and supporting development of the Cascade web application.

Position Responsibilities

  • Define the modeling architecture for Cascade in current and future phases
  • Lead engineering model development and deliver high quality modeling to software development
  • Work collaboratively through technical challenges in software application development
  • Define and lead Cascade model verification and validation activities
  • Evaluate modeling work processes and performance and work on continuous improvement to increase quality and throughput
  • Apply an interdisciplinary, collaborative approach to plan, design, develop and verify complex lifecycle balanced system of systems model for sustainable aviation
  • Evaluate customer/operational needs to define and coordinate system performance requirements, integrate technical parameters and assure compatibility of all functional and program interfaces
  • Performs various analyses to optimize total system of systems and/or system architecture
  • Develop, maintains and identifies improvements for the modeling team
  • Resolves modeling or cross-functional technical issues


This position allows telecommuting. The selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at one of the listed location options.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
  • Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry
  • 4+ years of experience working in a distributed environment and multiple teams
  • 2+ years of experience with Software Development Processes


Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
  • 10+ years of related work experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Experience with aviation sector traffic, fleet and aircraft performance modeling
  • Experience with full-stack software development
  • Experience with integration of modeling and simulation capabilities into software applications
  • Experience with advanced mathematical principles as applied to aerospace analysis and modeling (e.g. calculus, differential equations, probability, statistics, transform methods, modeling, computational geometry, numerical linear algebra, optimization, computational math, numerical analysis, discrete and continuous systems)
  • Experience with domain expertise and the ability to utilize to fully model a system at appropriate fidelity
  • Experience with of programming languages (e.g., C, Matlab, Visual Basic, C, Assembly, C#, Java)
  • Experience in modeling and prototyping tools (e.g., Matlab , MathCAD, manufacturer specific tools for signal processing software)
  • Experience with computing equipment and its operating systems (e.g., Windows, Unix, Linux)
  • Experience with software development and testing tools (e.g., editors, compilers, linkers, desktop simulations, configuration management tools, requirements management tools) capability and usage
  • Experience in modeling techniques (e.g., mathematical modeling, simulation, design of experiments, operations research) to analyze a system
  • Experience evaluating complex vehicles and systems from a multitude of perspectives. Includes the ability to apply figures of merit and integrated optimization tools
  • Experience performing multi-disciplinary trade studies to evaluate configuration alternatives for functional and spatial integration


Typical Education & Experience:

Lead (Level 4 Lead)

Bachelor's degree and typically 9 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a Master's degree with typically 7 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a PhD degree with typically 4 or more years' experience in an engineering classification. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Senior (Level 5 Senior):

Bachelor's degree typically 14 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a Master's degree with typically 12 or more years' experience in an engineering classification or a PhD degree with typically 9 or more years' experience in an engineering classification. Bachelor, Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry. ABET is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.

Summary pay range Level 4 Lead: $111,350-$173,650

Summary pay range Level 5 Senior: $136,850-$212,750
