Japanese Garden Curator

The University of Virginia Foundation (UVAF) is inviting applications for a full-time Japanese Garden Curator at its Morven Farm Property. This position is responsible for the day to day management of 2+ acre Japanese stroll garden and sukiya-style house and asumaya.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE, BUT NOT LIMITED TO:

Garden maintenance duties include pruning of trees and shrubs, maintaining a variety of ground covers and perennials, construction of bamboo fences, occasional rock replacement, restoration and new plantings and integrated pest management.

Maintains proper water quality in the pond and performs routine maintenance of waterfall pumps.

Prepares garden for special events to include the design of ikebana floral arrangements and assists in leading group tours.

Responsible for shared maintenance and care of a 720 sq. ft. greenhouse with 100 + species, including orchids and other tropical plants.

Assists in the preparation and administration of the annual Japanese garden budget.

Responsible for continuing the maintenance of a horticultural plant inventory database program.

Orders materials, supplies and equipment required for operation of the garden.

Supervises activities of supplementary staff, third party vendors, and contractors when performing jobs in the Japanese Garden.

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND SKILLS

An undergraduate degree in horticulture or fine arts is preferred, but not required.

At least five years' experience in gardening design and maintenance, to include general groundskeeping functions, as well as those responsibilities specific to a Japanese garden. The candidate also needs a general familiarization with Japanese culture, customs and architecture and principles of Japanese Garden maintenance.

Excellent oral and written communication skills, and proficient computer skills required.

Ability to operate utility vehicles, power and hand tools, and equipment necessary to perform required tasks successfully.
