Job Title: Patient Financial CounselorLocation: Geisinger Medical Center HospitalDepartment: FinanceWork Schedule: DaysWork Type: Full TimeHiring Manager: Melanie DerrJob Summary:Provides financial counseling either in person or via telephone for all patients for designated areas; admissions-scheduled and/or elective, in/out surgeries and/or outpatient clinical services. Provides coordination and completion of patient billing and collection functions either at the time of the initial interview, prior to the services being rendered and/or after the insurance carrier has paid. Maintains a close working relationship with the staff of the assigned clinical departments, to ensure clear communication and handling of all patients’ financial needs. Provides accurate and efficient service to patients. Completes POS collections including co-payments, deductibles, and remaining estimated balances at point of service.Performs duties to support the goals and objectives of the Geisinger Health System in its efforts to provide the highest level of quality patient care and patient satisfaction.Directly accountable to the Supervisor, Revenue Cycle.Competencies and Skills:Adapts personal skills as needed to the utilization of new technologies that are deployed in an effort to achieve optimal performance and drive future business processes and improvements with respect to all Revenue Management functions and the various service lines.Develops, implements and directs various quality initiatives to insure continuous monitoring and improvements within the Revenue Management process of GHS. This includes performing overall departmental operating functions within pre-determined limits and within Freedom-To-Act guidelines to insure operational efficiencies and obtaining pre-determined performance and quality targets.REVENUE MANAGEMENT KNOWLEDGE - Demonstrates the ability to understand and strive to meet Revenue Management targets; decrease overall A/R over 90 days, increase cash and affectivity work through and assist patients and/or providers with the Discounting Policies and/or Bad Debt Policies.CUSTOMER SERVICE SKILLS - a series of activities designed to enhance the level of customer satisfaction, that is, the feeling that a product or service has met or exceeded the customer’s expectation. Consistent adherence to all GHS service standards, including but not limited to C.I. CARE.CUSTOMER INTERACTION - knowledge of practices, tools, and techniques for communicating with a customer. May involve dealing with individuals with a range of moods and behaviors in a tactful, personal manner.COMMUNICATION SKILLS - demonstrates oral, written, and electronic communication skills.COMPUTER SKILLS - demonstrates basic navigation in a windows environment, and passwords and security. Accesses the internet, uses basic browser functionality, and understands policy on Internet usage. Demonstrates the ability to compose, send and read emails, understands email functionality and conventions related to replying.BILLING SYSTEM KNOWLEDGE – demonstrates advanced knowledge of automated billing systems (EPIC, IDX, Siemens, Promise, Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Navinet, Transunion, Presumptive Eligibility, Artiva, Carepricer, DIMS, Compass, CORE, SharePoint and Tower) preferred.FINANCIAL SKILLSOFFICE SKILLS - Demonstrates basic office skills including, but not limited to: phones, email, copying, faxing, filing, scheduling, mail, etc.PAYER PRACTICES KNOWLEDGE – Stays abreast of regulatory and payer policy changesINDEPENDENT WORK - In the position of a Business Service Coordinator, the individual must work independently or with limited supervision, with a consistent display of initiative, resourcefulness, problem solving skills, and the ability to retain information.TEAM PLAYER - Must be able to work and communicate effectively in a team environment.Education and or Experience:High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree or Associate’s degree preferred.Minimum of three years’ experience in Healthcare or insurance industry with a focus on Registration, Financial Services, or Customer Service required.Obtain and maintain certification as a Certified Application Counselor, CAC within 6 months of hire. As a CAC, you are required to be able to provide information about insurance affordability programs and coverage options, assist in applying for coverage and insurance affordability programs in the Marketplace, and help facilitating enrollment in health coverage while complying with all state and federal guidelines.Knowledge of billing requirements, financial counseling and payment options, and ability to collect upfront payments required.Overall knowledge of the revenue cycle and accounts receivable required.Bilingual ability preferred.Experience with Patient Access ADT required.Working Conditions/Physical Demands:Position requires moderate physical demands including walking up to 1 mile per day on average, face-to-face patient interaction with combative patients and/or hostile work environment.The specific statements shown in each section of this description are not intended to be all-inclusive.
