Reports to: Beacon of Hope Director of Strategy and Programs and Executive Director

Program Overview

LYNCHBURG BEACON OF HOPE, a 501 (c)3 nonprofit organization based in Lynchburg, Virginia, seeks to inspire and empower Lynchburg City Schools (LCS) students to achieve post-secondary goals by providing the tools, knowledge and financial resources essential for success. To achieve this mission, LYNCHBURG BEACON OF HOPE (LBoH) is committed to seeing Lynchburg City School students to and through their post-secondary education, whether it be a four-year college, community college, industry-recognized technical certification programs, education through military service, or workforce training. The primary resource for creating and maintaining hope, accessibility, and affordability are LBoHs unique privately-funded High School Future Centers. These hubs for post-secondary readiness are located inside Heritage and EC Glass High Schools and are operated through a public-private partnership with Lynchburg City Schools.

Position Summary

The HERITAGE HIGH SCHOOL Future Center Director (FC Director) serves as a direct service provider and catalyst for collaboration. The HERITAGE HIGH SCHOOL FC Director works directly with school administration and counselors to deliver an integrated set of services to students and parents. The HHS FC Director is a dedicated educator who works to inspire the best in students.

Because such a goal-oriented culture builds the expectation of postsecondary education for all students, the role of the FC Director is a dynamic one. As the program matures, a wide variety of in-school and outreach activities allow the FC Directors to serve students, parents and school administration while supporting and complementing the work of school counselors and regularly reporting to Beacon of Hope management. Cultivating relationships and engaging the different stakeholders is critical to the overall success of Beacon of Hope.

FC Directors are expected to seek out and share best practices and evaluate the effectiveness /efficiency of the FCs in serving LCS students, parents and schools. Consistent and ongoing professional development will occur as FC Directors teach and learn about changes in federal and state financial aid policies, LCS school improvement initiatives, college access and advising, and implementation of our City-wide Stay Close, Go Far Scholarship Program.

Qualifications:

Requires a Bachelors Degree and related professional experience in counseling, career planning, guidance, financial aid, mentoring, college and career access or college recruiting;

Requires a result-focused, adaptable and creative work style;

Must demonstrate a successful track record of establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with diverse groups including students, parents, school staff and community partners;

Must demonstrate a successful employment history of managing and prioritizing multiple responsibilities and working with a wide variety of demographic groups;

Must demonstrate outstanding written and verbal communication skills, including research, analysis, well-organized written and verbal reports designed for a wide variety of audiences;

May require working non-standard hours including evenings and weekends. Future Center Hours are generally 8 am to 4 pm, but vary based on family appointments, evening workshops/events, and outreach initiatives.

A Preferred Candidate will possess a Masters Degree and/or have experience working with students in pursuit of post-secondary education;

Knowledge of data capture software is preferred.

Responsibilities

Direct and Coordinated Services

Manage the daily operations of the HHS Future Center, which includes advising, mentoring, family outreach, event planning, workshops, data collection and other tasks as assigned. Future Center work occurs during both traditional and nontraditional working hours and may include evening events, weekend trips, and after-hours appointments with families/students.

Promote the Beacon of Hope Commonwealth and STAY CLOSE, GO FAR Scholarship programs. Assist students and families with applications, entrance exams, and the financial aid process.

Coordinate college and career readiness initiatives in collaboration with existing college access resources and community partners. These include: workshops and bootcamps for students and families, college boards test prep sessions, FAFSA completions, College Knowledge Nights, Weekend Field Trips, etc.

Collaborate with the Director of College Success and CVCC Future Center Director in successfully transitioning students from high school to post-secondary education

Enter, Analyze and Report on Future Center data, measuring outcomes and pivoting programs to more effectively reach students and families. Future Center Directors operate under a stringent School Officials Agreement between LBoH and LCS. HHS FC Director is expected to adhere to FERPA-compliant guidelines as outlined in this partnership.

Outreach Duties

Participate in various community events including college fairs, college access program events, LCS events, or other events that align with Beacon of Hopes mission

Work with the Director of Strategy and Programs to develop, coordinate, and implement college access, readiness, and financial aid workshops for students and parents at satellite locations around the city

Supervise Future Center volunteer(s) , Near Peer College Advisors, and interns

Total Compensation

This position is a 10.5 month position, Full-Time. Future Center Director Position may require working non-standard hours, on site and in outreach locations, including some evenings and weekends. Any combination of education and experience that qualifies a candidate may be considered in lieu of the specific criteria listed above. Salary dependent on education and experience. Salary range $43,000 to $50,000. An annual stipend for retirement/health insurance is available.
