Position InformationJob DescriptionThe Richmond City Health District (RCHD) is recruiting for an entry level Environmental Health Specialist. The primary function of this position is to enforce the Commonwealth of Virginia Board of Health Food Regulations 12 VAC 5-421. The successful candidate, once trained, will inspect food establishments to ensure compliance with these regulations. They will interpret and apply environmental laws, regulations, policies and procedures in order to determine compliance and reduce the risk factors of foodborne illness. Work assignments may include inspections of restaurants and other food establishments; tourist establishments; insect and rodent abatement; swimming pool inspections; Summer Food Service Program inspections; follow up on general environmental complaints and foodborne illness investigations.Richmond City Health District’s MISSION: To expose and address the root causes of health disparities, protect healthy by preventing the spread of disease, and build health equity by partnering with communities and working collaboratively across sectors.

The successful candidate will have effective oral and written communication skills for interaction with the public, co-workers, other agencies and completing technical reports; customer service experience; the ability to interpret complex governmental regulations; be detailed and well organized. BS in Environmental Health or related field and/or equivalent training and experience. A valid driver’s license is also required. Must be able to complete training in the VDH Food Program and be able to obtain credentials in within 18 months.Preferred QualificationsBilingual in Spanish/English. Current Standardized Food Environmental Health Specialist (VDH). Proven experience in a position requiring effective communication skills. Regulatory/compliance experience preferred. Preferred certificates: Certified Food Protection Manager, Registered Environmental Health Specialist (REHS), Certified Professional – Food Safety (CP-FS) or ability to obtain certifications. Master’s Degree.Special RequirementsEmployment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a state and federal criminal history background check and the Department of Social Service’s Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check, U.S. HHS IG Exclusion List check, employment reference check, and E-Verify.
