Senior Wetland Scientist Position

Delineation Professionals, Inc. of Bellingham, Washington is seeking a senior-level wetland scientist. We are a small, full-service wetland consulting firm looking for a flexible, motivated biologist or environmental scientist to join our team.

This Senior Scientist position is full-time. Pay is commensurate with experience. Health, vision, and dental plan (Premera Blue Cross) is included after a probationary period. The focus of this position is wetland delineation and mitigation, from fieldwork, to permit, to monitoring. It is anticipated that more time will be spent with mitigation than with delineation.

The applicant must have the experience and qualifications needed to be listed on the Whatcom and Skagit County Qualified Consultant’s lists. The Senior Scientist will be listed as a qualified consultant, author his or her own reports, eventually work unsupervised, and will be responsible for his or her own work.

DPRO is an AutoCAD firm; we work closely with engineers, architects, and surveyors. All employees are required to use AutoCAD and complete their own exhibit drafting.

Job Duties Include:

Proposal writing;

Conducting wetland delineation fieldwork all times of year in both pasture and forest;

Transecting difficult ground with thick brush;

Mapping wetland flags on air photos and orienteering with compass and hip chain;

Using a survey-grade Trimble R10 GPS with TSC7 data collector to locate wetland flags;

Prepare delineation reports, data forms, wetland flag locator maps, and other written documents for clients and surveyors;

Completing the Washington State wetland rating forms and determining buffer widths;

AutoCAD drafting of report maps, rating form figures, and permit exhibits;

Assisting other staff members in the field and with proposal preparation;

Driving to and from the study areas, meeting clients and explaining results;

Mitigation design, functional assessment, and report preparation;

Section 404/401 permitting, local permitting for wetland and buffer impacts;

JARPA form preparation;

Project management for Section 404/401 permits and Whatcom County permits;

Meeting with agency staff and clients;

Mitigation site monitoring and reporting;

Experience and Qualifications:

Excellent oral and written communication skills and problem solving abilities;

A minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a biological science or closely related field;

Completion of two quarters of AutoCAD instruction or equivalent experience to prepare wetland delineation maps from GPS survey points and to draft report exhibits;

University of Washington Wetland Science and Management Certificate or completion other similar wetland science program;

Ten (10) years or more of progressively responsible experience in wetland mitigation and wetland delineation fieldwork and sampling;

Certified by WA Department of Ecology in the Washington State wetland rating system 2014 Update;

Extensive knowledge of the Corps of Engineers Wetlands Delineation Manual and the Western Mountains, Valleys, and Coast Regional Supplement;

Knowledge of Whatcom County Critical Areas Ordinance;

Ability to work alone and unsupervised in the field and from home;

Valid driver’s license and an insured vehicle for fieldwork (mileage reimbursed).

Additional Preferred Qualifications include:

Approved wetland delineations and mitigation plans in Whatcom County;

Wetland creation design;

Proficiency drafting AutoCAD Civil 3D;

Design-build wetland mitigation experience;

Large linear project (pipeline, utility, transportation) management experience;

NEPA and SEPA checklist preparation;

Expert witness experience.
