The Environmental Control Systems (ECS) Engineering is an organization of highly skilled women and men responsible for defining and integrating airplane systems for airplane cabin pressurization, air conditioning, ice and rain protection, fire protection, and avionics cooling. We are a team that supports all Boeing models both in development and in airline service. These models include programs such as the 737MAX, 747-8, 767/KC-46A Tanker, 777/777F, 787, the B-52 Engine Replacement, VC-25B Presidential Aircraft, the new generation 777X, or all-new airplane(s) that are currently in early developmental stages.

Boeing Commercial Airplanes Mechanical Systems Team is looking for a Mid-Level Mechanical System and Design Analysis Engineer to join our team in Everett, WA, or Renton, WA. This Individual will work within the Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA), Environmental Control Systems organization to develop, produce, deliver and support customers who fly Boeing airplanes. Enable high aircraft performance while operating in compliance with regulatory (FAA, EASA, etc.) requirements.

This individual will support the development and documentation of mechanical and fluid system and thermal environment requirements to establish the system design. Supports the development, maintenance, or modification of system, component, and installation designs/proposals to provide design documentation to downstream groups. Performs and documents analyses to validate and verify systems and components meet requirements and specifications. Contributes to supplier development, test, and production activities and directs the supplier to optimize integration and achieve program goals. Supports system components' designs/proposals standards to provide installation and detailed documentation. Trains others. Works under general direction.

This position will support one of three sub-teams within Environmental Controls Systems (ECS)

Ice & Rain Protection (ATA Chapter 30) Bleed Air Supply (ATA Chapter 36) Air Conditioning (ATA Chapter 21) Low-Pressure Analysis

This position will support one of three different Airplane Platforms and work with:

777X Development 737MAX-10 Development 747/767/777/787 Production and In-Service Support

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Requirements Traceability & Development Assurance.
  • Modernizing (example: Fortran code) analytical models into modern toolsets (example: Matlab/Simulink code).
  • Integrating several federated ECS flow-analysis or heat transfer models into a singular tool-set.
  • Automating data interfaces between several federated ECS models with federated Propulsion and Aerodynamic models.
  • Training junior engineers on how to utilize newly created modeling tools.
  • Systems Controls Support, including Dynamic Tuning.
  • Lab & Flight Test Support.
  • Factory and Airplane Delivery Center Support.
  • In-Service Issue Troubleshooting and Reliability Improvement Projects.
  • System Safety Analysis Documentation, including the creation of Fault Hazard Assessments (FHAs), Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (FMEAs), Fault Tree Analysis (FTAs).
  • Build Airplane Support Manuals, such as Fault Isolation Manual (FIM) and Component Maintenance Manual (CMM).
  • Interfacing with intra-Boeing engineering teams, such as Flight Deck Crew Operations, Pilots, Electrical Systems, Stress, Structures, Propulsion, and Aerodynamics.


The position must meet Export Control compliance requirements, therefore a "US Person" as defined by 22 C.F.R. § 120.15 is required. "US Person" includes US Citizen, lawful permanent resident, refugee, or asylee.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/ Experience):
  • Bachelor, Master, or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, or chemistry.
  • 5 or more years of engineering experience.


Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
  • Working within the Boeing Commercial Airplanes (BCA), Environmental Control Systems (ECS) organization to develop, produce, deliver and support customers who fly Boeing airplanes.
  • Enable high aircraft performance while operating in compliance with regulatory (FAA, EASA, etc) requirements.
  • Exercising strong project management skills to independently execute a variety of projects to completion.
  • Utilizing the Boeing Problem Solving Method (BPSM) to investigate the root cause of problems faced both during development and in-service by our customers who use our products.
  • Instigating corrective action plans and driving these to closure in a timely manner.
  • Collaborating with other organizations such as Aerodynamics Performance and Stability & Control, Structures, Flight Deck Crew Operations, Pilots, Electrical Systems, Systems Stress, Customer Services & Airline Customers, Factory and Flight Line Operations, Supply Chain, Airplane Safety, and many others.
  • Resolving a variety of issues and improvement programs.
  • Learning about legacy development processes and certification Methods of Compliance while actively helping transition Boeing to leverage Model-Based Engineering (MBE)/Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) methodology to write requirements, and conceptual systems.
  • Helping plan and execute developmental and certification testing and design/conduct flight tests.
  • Supporting engine manufacturer certification on their flying testbed vehicles.
  • Clear communication skills for reporting progress to a wide audience (cross-discipline engineering groups consisting of Aerodynamics, Propulsion, Structures, and ECS).
  • Technical Knowledge in system controls, mechanical systems, systems modeling, heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid dynamics.
  • Experience with model correlation from wind tunnel and/or flight test data to analysis tools and hands-on wind tunnel testing experience.
  • Learning about legacy development processes and certification Methods of Compliance while actively helping transition Boeing to leverage Model-Based Engineering (MBE)/Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) methodology to write requirements, and conceptual systems.
  • Experience with JIRA, Azure DevOps, DESE/Cameo, Matlab/Simulink, Scripting code (Matlab, C, Fortran), Thermal CFD Tool (ANSYS Fluent, Star CCM+, OpenFOAM or other), SINDA/FLUINT, LEWICE3D, FENDSAP-ICE.
    Meteorological knowledge or a private pilot's license would be a plus.
  • NOTE: Highly trained analysis SMEs in this group model the sub-freezing water droplet impingement on protected surfaces, evaluate runback ice characteristics, perform correlation with wind tunnel and/or flight test data to enable certification activities and improve predictive capabilities for future airplane development programs. Typical Education/Experience:

Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics, or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 5 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD, Master+3 years' related work experience). In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
