Youth Ministry Leader Job Description

Purpose: Develop, lead and organize the Youth Ministry (Grades 6 through 8) of the First Congregational Church (FCC) of Walla Walla, United Church of Christ, in fulfillment of our mission to provide for the spiritual nourishment and upbringing of our middle-school youth, deepening their connections with each other, our church, the wider community, and with God.

Reports to: FCC pastor, and works in cooperation with the Christian Education Committee.

Hours of Work

Currently this is a part-time position working 8 hours per week, 11 months per year. Hours may need to be adjusted to support the Church and youth activities with appropriate notice.

Job duties and responsibilities

WEEKLY

1. Create and lead Middle School programming (4-5 hrs./week)

— Coordinate with pastor and Christian Education Committee to develop an experiential-based curriculum with spiritual topics and activities that strengthen relationships throughout the church community.

— Implement engaging, age-appropriate, service-oriented curriculum relevant to the youths current life experience, including:

o High energy activities, both indoor and outdoor

o Participatory music experiences

o Social media literacy

— Recruit/ coordinate/ train volunteers for chaperoning, guest teaching, etc.

— Communicate with parents and congregation about youth curriculum and activities

— Maintain attendance records and permission slips

— Set up and maintain classroom and supplies

2. Communicate with church secretary about youth Christian Education events for weekly and monthly bulletin (.5 hr./week)

MONTHLY

1. Coordinate and lead monthly youth event and/or a less frequent immersive experience, such as service trip or lock-ins] (1-5 hrs/month

2. Attend staff meetings once a month (1 hr./month)

3. Attend Christian Education Committee meeting (1 hr./month)

4. Purchase supplies for youth ministry programming (1-2 hrs./month)

ANNUALLY

1. Assist Christian Education Committee with annual budget request and report (1-2 hrs./year)

2. Coordinate with Christian Education Committee for youth group involvement with Vacation Bible School, as applicable.

3. Assess ongoing programming needs and areas for growth

Required skills

— Commitment to spiritual development, education, and emotional health of diverse youth

— Knowledge of the Bible

— Demonstrated ability to develop and implement curriculum activities for youth Christian education

— Demonstrated ability to embody the non-judgmental, open and affirming values and welcoming spirit of FCC in all communications and interactions with youth group members and their diverse families.

— Competence in computer and technology usage

— Demonstrated ability to work independently and on a team

— Excellent leadership, organizational, communication and motivational skills

— Discretion and ability to maintain confidentiality

— Professional appearance and demeanor

Qualifications

— Minimum 2 years experience and/or education in leading and educating youth

— Commitment to nurturing the spiritual life of children and youth

— Flexible, energetic, fun, and creative

— Integrity to abide by FCCs safe church policies as well as our mission to be an open and affirming community of diverse Christian believers providing personal spiritual growth, collective outreach to the community, and stewardship of Gods creation.

Supervisory Responsibility

This position oversees youth program volunteers, including accountability to safe church policies

Work Environment

This job operates in a church office environment. This position routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.

Physical Demands

The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by employee to successfully perform essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Position frequently is required to stand, walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; and reach hands and arms.

This position requires ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds, and ability to climb stairs.
