The Boeing Defense, Space and Security (BDS) organization is seeking a Lead Software Engineer to be part of our Mission Systems Software team in Tukwila, WA. The team is responsible for engaging customers through cutting-edge visual modeling and simulation; innovating cross-cutting concepts and technologies; prototyping solutions to extend current products and win new programs; and developing new businesses and entering new markets. The organization is seeking a software engineer to support software for manned and unmanned vehicles. This software supports both domestic and international customers and is developed using the Agile software process. Support development of next generation Open Mission Software (OMS) Battle Management Command & Control (BMC2) Software for Commercial Derivative Aircraft (CDA) projects (AEWC, AWACS replacements). The BMC2 team develop mission software to integrate sensors, communication systems, self protect suites, weapon systems, data links, battle management tools, and other crew user interface functions for the CDA systems.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Leads design and development of Aircraft and/or Ground Systems software using real-time software architectures and designs
  • Leads use case development for software requirements.
  • Leads software architecture trade studies and modifications to meet new requirements. Manages the trade studies for the SW Team.
  • Develops, documents and maintains architectures, requirements, algorithms, interfaces and designs for software systems.
  • Provides technical leadership for software projects and leads software supplier management activities.
  • Leads development, selection, tailoring and deployment of processes, tools and metrics.
  • Leads development of interface definitions.
  • Leads the development, documentation and maintenance of architectures, requirements, algorithms, interfaces and designs for software systems.
  • Leads development and maintenance of code and integrates software components into a fully functional software system.
  • Leads development of software verification plans, test procedures and test environments, executing the test procedures and documenting test results to ensure software system requirements are met.
  • Leads software project management and software supplier management functions.
  • Leads Selects, tailors and deploys processes and tools; establishes metrics. Performs software research and trade studies.
  • Leads Software Troubleshooting of software issues including system and flight testing.
  • Serves as a subject matter expert for software domains, system-specific issues, processes and regulations.
  • Tracks and evaluates software team and supplier performance to ensure product and process conformance to project plans and industry standards.
  • Executes and documents software research and development projects.
  • Tracks and evaluates software team and supplier performance to ensure product and process conformance to project plans and industry standards.
  • Trains and mentors others.
  • Works under consultative direction.


The selected team member enjoys working collaboratively with others, has a commitment to customer satisfaction and process improvement, and is successful working in a multi-contract/multi-program environment. He/she will support and may lead the development of solutions to a wide range of complex problems that require ingenuity and innovation. This position allows telecommuting. The selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at one of the listed location options.

Security Clearance and Export Control Requirements:

This position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance, for which the US Government requires ship. An interim and/or final U.S. Secret Clearance Post-Start is required.

Basic Qualifications (Required Skills/Experience):
  • 14+ years of experience in C, Java, Python, and/or similar programming languages and Real Time Architectures
  • Experience with Linux and Windows development environments, Virtualization, Containerization, Kubernetes
  • Experience with or knowledge of Agile software development processes and use case development
  • Detailed Knowledge of Modern Software Architecture, Development Tool Chains


Preferred Qualifications (Desired Skills/Experience):
  • Software certification knowledge for Military Platforms
  • Knowledge of or experience with unmanned aerial vehicles and/or Mission Systems domain areas such as ground stations, data links, data/sensor fusion, human-machine interfaces
  • Detailed domain knowledge related to US Air Force, US Navy, and similar Battle Management domains such as sensor integration, data links, battle management processing, and multi-platform integration
  • Master or Doctorate of Science degree from an accredited course of study, in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry
  • Communications, and Algorithms
  • Cyber Security architecture


Typical Education/Experience:
  • Education/experience typically acquired through advanced technical education from an accredited course of study in engineering, computer science, mathematics, physics or chemistry (e.g. Bachelor) and typically 14 or more years' related work experience or an equivalent combination of technical education and experience (e.g. PhD+9 years' related work experience, Master+12 years' related work experience).
  • In the USA, ABET accreditation is the preferred, although not required, accreditation standard.
