Jamestown SKlallam Tribe (JST) is searching for a Tribal Historic Preservation Officer (THPO) to join our team! The THPO will be the primary point of contact in all matters relating to cultural resources issues, including but not limited to, archaeological finds related to JST, advocacy for the preservation of known cultural sites, historical/cultural information requests, and liaison work with local museums, governments, and agencies. This position will lead Tribal efforts to coordinate long-range cultural revitalization, education, preservation and enhancement, including cultural programming for children, youth, elders, JST employees, and clients of Tribal programs; and oversight of the Tribal archival and museum collections. This position is responsible for coordination and communication with various Tribal departments and outside organizations.

Starting wage is dependent on experience.

As a Tribal Historic Preservation Officer, you will:

➤Representative for the Tribes NAGPRA activities by establishing and maintaining good relationships and agreements with museums and federal agencies regarding repatriation of Tribally affiliated human remains and sacred objects.

➤Establish and maintain relationships with Tribal, local, State and Federal governments pertaining to all aspects of historic preservation and cultural resource management.

➤Tribal contact for cultural resources issues, including but not limited to, archaeological finds related to the Tribe, advocacy for the preservation of known cultural sites, historical/cultural information requests and liaison work with local museums, governments and agencies.

➤Provide public information, education and training and technical assistance in historic preservation.

➤Representative liaison for the Tribal Council and Tribal Culture Committee to ensure the overall cultural restoration and preservation goals of the Tribe are met.

➤Develop and direct all historic preservation and cultural resource management projects, activities, and investigations.

➤Directly participate in field work for historic preservation and cultural resource management projects, as necessary.

➤Maintain knowledge of all Federal, State, and Tribal regulations relevant to historic preservation and cultural resource management.

➤Review development projects for potential impacts upon historic and prehistoric resources.

➤Monitor, document and investigate culturally significant sites.

➤Prepare annual performance evaluations, oversee hiring processes and properly administer and apply Tribal personnel policies and procedures

What are the Required Qualifications for this position?

➤Masters degree in Archaeology or Anthropology

➤One (1) year of demonstrated experience working directly with field crews, conducting analysis of research data, and contributing to research reports.

➤Meets the Secretary of the Interiors professional qualifications standards in Archaeology

➤Familiarity with regulations and standards of various regulatory and credentialing groups relevant to historic preservation and cultural resource management, including the Section 106 process, and willingness to acquire technical/professional training as needed.

➤Excellent communication skills, including writing/composition and public speaking skills.

➤Demonstrates tact, patience and discretion and a professional demeanor.

➤Proficiency in the use of field/GIS tools such as a compass, topographic maps, ArcPAD, Trimble and tablets for GPS data collection, and must possess a strong command of field techniques.

➤Proficiency in researching ethnographic documentation and soils/environmental/cultural backgrounds, SHPO databases, GLO plats, land patents/historic maps and tax assessments with the ability to recognize the need for and the location of additional resources.

➤Experience with inventory, monitoring, and writing research reports and plans, with the ability to consistently produce high quality products and with the knowledge and understanding of appropriate style for the document requested.

➤Familiarity with museum curation and conservation best practices.

➤Must possess effective interpersonal and culturally sensitive skills and a strong customer service ethic. The ability to develop and maintain positive interaction with the Tribal community and the non-Native community is a key component of this position, including the ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically with Tribal staff, State and Federal agencies, the public and other relevant groups

➤Knowledge of office administrative operations, including personnel management

➤Demonstrate initiative and the ability to work independently as well as collaboratively

➤Excellent organization skills and the ability to prioritize multiple tasks

➤Effective time management, decision-making, and problem-solving skills

➤Computer proficiency in Microsoft Suites, internet-based research and database management software, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS)

➤Ability to travel locally and regionally as assigned

➤Valid Drivers License

➤Must be able to successfully pass criminal background investigation

What are the Preferred Qualifications for this position?

➤Knowledge and understanding of the JST culture, history and pre-history and demonstrated commitment to the restoration and preservation of the Tribes cultural foundations

➤Experience in education material development preferred

➤American Indian/Alaska Native preferences apply
