Plant Engineering Intern

The Plant Engineering organization provides engineering oversight, program support, and qualified staff to support the Hanford Tank Waste Treatment and Immobilization Plant (WTP) mission. Near term support is provided by the Waste Treatment Completion Company (WTCC). The WTP is one of the world’s largest environmental remediation projects located on the Department of Energy Hanford Site, outside of Richland, WA. The mission includes safely storing, treating, and immobilizing the highly hazardous radiological wastes created during prior periods of nuclear processing at the Hanford Reservation. This position shall be performed under the day-to-day direction, control and supervision of WTCC.Plant Engineering hires Summer Interns from many different Engineering disciplines. Work assignments will vary depending upon the discipline. WTCC strives to provide meaningful work and unique opportunities to support missions vital to plant operations. Some examples of typical work activities for Summer Interns are provided below.

Assist System Engineers with researching vendor information, data collection/analysis of plant operating history, review of codes and standards, as well as evaluation of industry guidance for the establishment and refinement of operations and maintenance strategies for equipment within assigned area [All Disciplines]

Development of data tracking and trending tools for System Engineers to better analyze and predict system issues and failures [All Disciplines]

Development of tools to track performance metrics across a myriad of Plant Engineering topics including training, tickets, design changes, temporary modification, staffing, programs, etc… [All Disciplines]

Development and maintenance of electronic forms to streamline Plant Engineering processes and procedures [Computer Systems / Computer Science]

Development of 3-dimentional models to support 3-D printing of prototypes for proposed design changes [Mechanical]

Data collection and analysis of plant sample data to support process control and product compliance [Chemical]

Assist System Engineers in the development of arc flash calculations supporting the electrical safety program [Electrical]

Support Plant Engineering with configuration, tuning, securing, and management of the information technology system. [Computer Science/Computer Systems]

Support the Waste Treatment Plant Nuclear Safety Quality Culture by emphasizing the values of safety and quality in the performance of work in order to protect self, others, and the environment [All Disciplines]
