If so, UW Statistics has an exciting opportunity for a Full Stack Web Developer to develop web based applications that support key departmental operations and maintain multiple external facing Drupal based web sites.

This is a highly independent position that reports to the Director of IT for the Department of Statistics.
The position can be on-campus or remote, which will be negotiated prior to hire.

As a Full Stack Web Developer:You will craft, plan, and develop web based applications in a production environment, leveraging external APIs to integrate multiple data sources. You will assign feature development to student web developers, providing mentorship, monitoring progress, and participating in code reviews and testing. In addition, you will develop and manage multiple Drupal based departmental websites, including extending themes and modules where necessary. You will provide website consultation services to others within the department, delivering outstanding development support. You will also be expected to enthusiastically identify areas for improvement, drive projects, build user relationships and successfully implement changes in the environment. We function as a strong team and at times you may be asked to serve as backup to the other IT staff during vacations and absences. Flexibility to perform occasional work outside of normal business hours/may be required.

Typical projects include the following:
  • Build and maintain internal web services, with a high familiarity and strong experience in PHP 7+ applications - including adherence to MVC design patterns and best-practice PSR standards.
  • Utilize various API resources to continuously develop internal workflows for our faculty, students, and staff.
  • Develop and maintain our Drupal 9 web presence, by building onto custom modules, customizing templates (Twig), constructing views for a variety of content types and complexities, and configuring block layouts.
  • Provide direction and mentorship for student web developer and helpdesk employees.
  • Monitor and respond to alerts of service outages with a goal of minimizing downtime and ensuring system stability.
  • Determine new ways to continuously improve performance and scalability of our web-based applications.
  • Continuously update and provide technical documentation on various projects.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering or related field. Equivalent experience may substitute for the educational requirements.
  • Three+ years of web development and application support.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Thorough knowledge of the jQuery API, DOM API, HTML and CSS and experience creating, maintaining and writing queries for relational databases such MS-SQL, MySQL 8+, and MariaDB 10.14+.
  • Proven expertise in building web sites and/or web-based applications.
  • Outstanding oral and written communication skills with the ability to work effectively with a diverse range of users with varying technical abilities.
  • Strong organizational, task-management and prioritization skills.

DESIRED:
  • Development experience with Drupal, especially theming/front end development and site administration
  • Experience building fast and scalable RESTful APIs and experience crafting scalable data models.
  • Experience with Docker (or other container-based solution) in both a production and development environments.
  • Familiarity with automated deployment tools such as Jenkins.
  • Solid grasp of TCP/IP, DNS and Ethernet networking technologies.
