Job Description

At Boeing, we innovate and collaborate to make the world a better place. From the seabed to outer space, you can contribute to work that matters with a company where diversity, equity and inclusion are shared values. We're committed to fostering an environment for every teammate that's welcoming, respectful and inclusive, with great opportunity for professional growth. Find your future with us.

The Electromagnetic Effects team of Boeing Research and Technology (BR&T) in Tukwila, WA researches and develops technology in Electromagnetic Effects analysis, design, and test methods for application across the Boeing enterprise. Areas of focus include electromagnetic compatibility, electromagnetic interference, lightning direct and indirect effects, static charge and dissipation, materials characterization to electrical effects, and computational electromagnetic model development to support these research areas. Research supports the development of technology for all Boeing business units and programs including Boeing Commercial Aircraft and Boeing Defense, Space and Security Systems.

This position allows telecommuting. The selected candidate will be required to perform some work onsite at one of the listed location options.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Apply electromagnetic theory to develop advanced electrical analysis and measurement techniques and test processes for determining lightning direct effects and static charge performance on carbon fiber composites and mixed-material structural interfaces. Apply analytical calculations, numerical models, and electromagnetic effects knowledge to expand analytic models of materials, features, components and systems from small scale to final product. Test materials for electrical failure modes and sparking as it relates to ignition.Interface with materials engineers for the qualification of new materials that meet lightning direct effects and static charge performance requirements, while meeting structural and manufacturing engineering requirements.
  • Maintain and advance computational electromagnetic and multi-physics tools, to include time- and frequency-domain methods in both low frequency and high frequency models, such as finite difference time domain (FDTD), method of moments (MoM), finite/boundary element methods (FEM/BEM), and asymptotic techniques (PO, PTD, GTD, UTD, etc.). The solution space ranges from static, through anisotropic materials characterization
  • Apply electromagnetic knowledge to the improvement of analysis and test methods. Define test scenarios; create computer models and test articles; participate in test execution at local and remote Boeing labs; review and interpret test results; and compare test results to results published in the public domain and to computational analyses from internal and commercially available tools such as FEKO, CST, and HFSS. Apply knowledge of associated test parameters and limitations of each. Apply knowledge of test facilities, instrumentation, calibration techniques and error quantification for electromagnetic testing. Apply knowledge of development, production, certification, qualification, quality assurance, and acceptance testing.
  • Work in a research-focused and milestone-defined environment. Achieve desired outcomes on projects on-time. Work under consultative direction with other electromagnetic effects and multidisciplinary teammates in an environment of open collaborative and communication. Work effectively with others from diverse backgrounds and skill sets. Clearly convey information and ideas through a variety of media to engage the audience and ensure understanding and retention.
