The Yakima Humane Society is a non-profit shelter organization seeking a skilled, energetic, self-motivated Veterinarian to assist the shelter in preparing animals for their forever homes by providing services such as spay/neuter surgeries, medical assessments and treatments. This is an exciting, fast-paced and challenging position. The veterinarian works with a small medical team of veterinary assistants, performing spay/neuter surgeries on shelter and public animals and providing other medical care to shelter animals. The primary responsibilities include performing high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter surgeries for shelter and public animals along with community cats, examining and monitoring health of shelter animals, and treatment of shelter animals.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform an average of 30 high quality, high volume spay/neuter surgical procedures daily.
  • Oversee all aspects of veterinary care during a clinic day including, diagnostics, treatment recommendations and delivery, prescriptions and discharge information.
  • Oversee veterinary care for shelter animals daily including physical examination, surgery, pre- and post-operative care, anesthetic administration and monitoring, emergency care, restraint and treatment.
  • Provide leadership, direction, guidance and training for veterinary technicians and other shelter staff. Educate staff and volunteers regarding animal disease.
  • Communicate medical decisions, recommendations and care protocols to staff and clients.
  • Document exam findings, test results and treatment recommendations.
  • Attend staff meetings, doctor meetings and other requested meetings. Attend public vaccine and wellness clinics.

  • Maintain an open mind regarding changes and willing to learn, implement, and teach new protocols

Qualifications:

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (Required)
  • Licensed in Washington or ability to become licensed prior to employment
  • Current DEA license or ability to obtain prior to employment
  • Interest in animal welfare, population control and serving low-income communities

Job Type: Full-time (part-time may be considered)

Salary: $75,000.00 to $85,000/year

Experience: Prefer one year of experience working/volunteering in veterinary clinic, or similar environment as a veterinarian. Experience working or volunteering in an animal shelter or TNR program is a plus.
