Position Purpose

Conducts onsite assessments of laboratory equipment, testing procedures and quality systems to ensure compliance with ASTM standards for concretes, cements, and other masonry products.

Organization Role

This is a first level technical professional (exempt) position within the ASTM organization structure. The position reports initially to the Manager, LIP Training, and, subsequently, to the Manager, Technical Operations or Manager, Inspection Operations, as assigned by the CCRL Director.

Incumbents exercise some discretion and judgment in carrying out their onsite laboratory inspections, but generally follow established work/test methods and procedures.

The Laboratory Inspector I functions as an individual contributor, but will provide work direction to laboratory personnel during the conduct of an onsite assessment.

Responsibilities

1. CONDUCT ONSITE ASSESSMENTS OF PARTICIPATING LABORATORIES

Key/Representative Activities:

• Based on the request from a client laboratory, plans an onsite inspection based on the items included in the request; schedules adequate time to cover the included demonstrations and equipment evaluations, ensures that necessary equipment and supplies are readily available.

• Conducts at least 40 onsite inspections annually; test methods, observes performance of laboratory personnel and evaluates equipment needed to perform tests included in the inspection request.

• Based on observations, advises laboratory personnel on appropriate testing methods/techniques, test documentation, training methods, and general best practices for compliance with ASTM standards.

• Prepares a written report on a client laboratory’s overall compliance with ASTM standards, identifying specific areas in and out of conformity with standards and offering recommendations to bring all aspects of laboratory operations within standards.

• Observes all ASTM/CCRL safety standards in conducting onsite inspections.

2. MAINTAINS TECHNICAL TRAINING AND PROFICIENCY

Key/Representative Activities:

• Fully participates in continuing education and training programs offered by CCRL; test methods, material analysis, equipment capabilities/operations/specifications, and relevant certifications.

• Applies latest methods successfully in the field.

3. TEAMWORK

Key/Representative Activities:

• Supports CCRL proficiency sample production operations when not traveling to laboratory inspection sites.

• Supports the CCRL Quality Program by following quality procedures.

• On special assignments, understands role in team situations.

• Works cooperatively with team members to accomplish work.

• Requests and provides assistance from/to team members as needed (effective utilization of team capabilities/resources).

Minimum Requirements

• A Bachelor’s degree, preferably in a technical discipline such as Sciences or Engineering

• Able to travel independently and extensively. Ability to sit while driving for extended time periods.

• A valid driver’s license.

• Ability to lift and/or carry up to 75 lbs.

Preferred Qualifications & Competencies

• Scientific/technical knowledge of material test methods and procedures and 1-2 years of relevant work experience in a laboratory or manufacturing environment.

• Advanced analytical and problem solving skills.

• Strong organizational and job planning skills.

• Strong communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with fellow staff, laboratory personnel, etc.
