Bountiful Hope, Inc. needs a passionate and experienced Garden Manager to provide leadership and vision for the Bountiful Hope Garden, a 1 acre garden and community space located 4 miles outside Monroe Wisconsin. The Bountiful Hope Garden, launched in May 2009, grows chemical-free produce for donation to those in need in southwest Wisconsin.

Garden Manager Responsibilities:

Garden activities: Direct all aspects of growing fresh produce. Tasks include, but are not limited to, seasonal garden planning, procuring seeds, starting seedlings, organizing and setting priorities for work days and weekly garden open hours, general maintenance (weeding, watering, composting, etc.), hosting open garden hours (depending on season), and providing learning opportunities for the community. Garden Manager will have latitude for independent judgment on how to structure garden use and operations.

Coordinate Community Engagement Activities: Coordinate Bountiful Hope Community to assist with planning and execution of garden and community programs. Facilitate regular meetings with Bountiful Hope Community. Identify and coordinate opportunities Bountiful Hope Community to participate in all opportunities to increase awareness and learning.

Fundraising & Accounting: Research grants and assist the Bountiful Hope Board with writing grant applications to secure funds for garden activities/programs, and assist with grassroots and crowdsource funding efforts. Manage accounting for Bountiful Hope operational budget: record all financial transactions (e.g. grant awards, expenditures, private donations, etc.) and work with the Bountiful Hope Board to plan for and track garden expenses. Prepare the annual budget and provide quarterly expense reports.

Metrics: Collect and log attendance, and harvest yield to measure reach and effectiveness of garden programs.

Program support: Initiate and facilitate on-site workshops and provide administrative and operational support for community programs. Examples include but arent limited to healthy cooking workshops, workshops facilitated on-site by other organizations.

Outreach & Publicity: Develop and implement creative community outreach strategies to engage new members of the community on an ongoing basis, including creating and posting flyers and managing weekly Facebook posts; taking, filing, and posting photos of garden events/activities, etc.

Partnerships: Seek creative partnerships and opportunities for collaboration with nonprofit community groups to strengthen garden program offerings and to build relationships with local community-based organizations.

Manage summer volunteers and paid staff: Interview, hire, supervise and provide detailed work plans for summer staff for April to September

The Garden Manager should meet the following minimum criteria:

Have a high school diploma or equivalent, bachelors degree preferred

Have at least two years of experience working in community garden in a leadership role, or have a strong background in urban agriculture or gardening

Have strong communication skills”written, verbal, and in one-on-one interactions”and be comfortable working in/with groups.

Be an outgoing self-starter willing to develop and act on creative opportunities to increase the Bountiful Hopes value

Be highly organized, able to work independently, and exercise sound judgment given creative latitude in garden management

Be willing to work 25-30 hours per week in the high season (April “ September) and 10-15 hours per week in low season (February, March, Oct)

Be able to perform physical work required for garden maintenance

Have own cell phone that can be reliably used for garden-related communication

Have own vehicle that can be reliably used for transportation to and from garden site

Be familiar with using Microsoft Word and Google Docs and Spreadsheets

The ideal candidate will also possess the following skills (strongly preferred, but not required):

Excellent grant writing skills

A knack for writing social media posts to make the garden more visible to the community

Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint (or Google Docs, Spreadsheets, and Slides)

Timeline: This position will begin February 2019
