JOB DESCRIPTION

Title: Shelter Education Assistant (Part-Time-30 hrs.)

Reports to: Community Engagement Coordinator

Exempt Status: Hourly

PURPOSE OF THE JOB

To develop the education program, dispensing current and accurate humane education information to the communities we serve. Responsible for ensuring that children and adults attending education events have a safe, fun, and educational experience. To coordinate educational endeavors in the community and at the shelter with volunteers, provide support for events and other fundraisers and work with the Community Engagement Coordinator to support any additional shelter needs and further the mission of CRHS.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Develop, schedule and execute tours of the shelter, birthday parties, movie/craft nights, themed seasonal events, summer camps, boy/girl scout programs and offer additional educational events for members of the community on your own or with the help of volunteers, including set up and clean up time.
  • Create new or improve existing educational opportunities available to the community.
  • Provide feedback to the Community Engagement Coordinator and Executive Director regarding the success of new events and evaluate continuation for those events.
  • Complete off-site presentations and attend education focused programs and events as a CRHS representative.
  • Supervise the safety of education participants at all times.
  • Mentor and support local elementary, high school, and college students’ interested in fulfilling projects by working with CRHS as needed.
  • Help maintain the health and welfare of animals involved in educational activities.
  • Teach and supervise participants to ensure they have a fun and educational experience.
  • Maintain a clean and organized environment wherever activities are held.
  • Responsible for recruiting, training, and scheduling both pet therapy (human and animal) and shelter volunteers.
  • Manage all volunteers under the direction of the Community Engagement Coordinator to ensure proper representation of CRHS services to the communities served, the pet therapy program and the shelter volunteer program.
  • Prepare and maintain a database of shelter and pet therapy volunteers including but not limited to name, address, volunteer interests, and availability and facilities that utilize the pet therapy program to be kept on file at Coulee Region Humane Society.
  • Communicate to all volunteers via various means including mail, email, and phone using the means that is both effective for volunteers and cost effective for CRHS.
  • Coordinate volunteers for animal care, fundraising, educational endeavors, and events and pet therapy visits with both volunteers and the facilities, organizations, and events that request pet therapy.
  • Attend events to support CRHS volunteers.
  • Address groups on volunteer opportunities at CRHS as needed.
  • Create tools in which both pet therapy volunteers and facility volunteers are able to offer feedback on their respective volunteer programs.
  • Responsible for giving reward items and recognition to volunteers for time spent dedicated to the program.
  • Responsible for ordering and maintaining stock of volunteer shirts, accessories, buttons, and reward items.
  • Responsible for creating personalized buttons so that volunteers can be identified when volunteering.
  • Create promotional material in conjunction with the Marketing and Communications Coordinator.
  • Maintain Education Program brochures for school and community programs.
  • Provide Humane Education opportunities in the community to include all age groups.
  • Maintain annual records for the Humane Education program including both on and off site visits.
  • Seek out opportunities to promote and develop education programs within the communities we serve.
  • Maintain a clean and presentable work space including but not limited to: sweeping, mopping, sanitizing, organizing and disposing of trash.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

· Humane Educator Certification required within 1 year of employment.

· Ability to work up to 40 hours per week during event preparation.

· Appropriate degree or equivalent work experience.

· Experience with children and animals preferred.

· Practical knowledge of domestic animals and confidence handling animals, including snakes, rats, lizards, and guinea pigs (can be developed on the job).

· Must have own transportation, a valid driver’s license and proof of car insurance.

· Able to work a flexible schedule, including nights and weekends as needed.

· Excellent communication skills and must be comfortable speaking and leading activities for large groups.

· Working knowledge of educational techniques and principles.

· Acquire a thorough understanding and dedication to the philosophies of animal welfare and those specific to The Coulee Region Humane Society.

· Must comply with CRHS employee-owned animal policies.

· Able to represent CRHS in a pleasant and professional manner.
