Adult Supervisor

Vacancy expired!

The University of Wisconsin Survey Center is now recruiting part-time, temporary Adult Supervisors for the 2022 Retail Tobacco Compliance Check Survey throughout Wisconsin.

The Wisconsin Department of Health and Family Services, Bureau of Substance Abuse Services has contracted with us to carry out this survey to monitor the sale of tobacco products to minors. Federal law requires that all states comply with section 1926 of the Public Health Service Act. In order to do this, Wisconsin must collect scientific survey data detailing any trends in tobacco sales to underage youth over the next several years.

We are looking for responsible adults (21+) who are able to recruit and train 2-4 teenagers (at least 1 male and 1 female if possible), ages 17-20, to work as part of a survey team. The adult will be trained on survey protocol on Saturday, June 4th, in Madison. After June 4th their team will typically drive to between 30 and 110 pre-selected locations (restaurants, supper clubs, gas stations, etc.) within their county and surrounding areas.

At each location, the teens will attempt to purchase tobacco products and then return to the vehicle, and the supervisor will fill out a brief survey form. This process will be repeated at each location. The majority of hours will likely be spent travelling, as the locations are randomly selected and may be in rural areas. All money for purchasing tobacco is reimbursed or supplied to the teams, and all tobacco products are collected and destroyed. In past years, adult supervisors have typically worked 40 to 80 hours total over the field period to complete their assigned survey locations. It is important to note that this is simply data collection - there is no penalty to the vendors.

Supervisors will be paid $20/hour + mileage and expenses, and teenage participants will be paid $15/ hour + meals. Teams must complete the assigned data collection between June 4th and July 9th, 2022. The University of Wisconsin has been conducting this survey for over ten years, providing short-term work for adults and a source of income for teens during the summer.
