This position is responsible for working with and supporting the department supervisors in the efficient operation of the Compounding Department to meet safety and OEE expectations established by management. The scope of the job includes testing batches to ensure quality specifications are met, keeping appropriate quality and test records, troubleshooting process issues, operator training and performance improvement.

The scope of the job includes testing batches of rubber, maintaining job specific records, troubleshooting process issues while working on root cause analysis in NCR investigations. Collaborating with operators to implement a corrective action plan and relaying the information to the department manager is a function of this position. In the case of a process or equipment issue, the Process/Lab Tech will work closely with the department supervisors, production employees and maintenance personnel to resolve the problem and meet the shift objectives.

The Process/Lab Technician also works closely with the Mixing Operations Manager on process improvement. At her direction, he/she will run studies, collect data and train team members. He/She will seek input and suggestions from operators and make recommendations to management. Availability, Quality Performance, and Process Improvement are key objectives for this position.

Responsibilities will include:

- Perform a process audit at the beginning of the shift. Process audits include verifying workstation setup and operation, reviewing TPM checklists, completing a safety checklist and soliciting operator feedback on issues they’ve identified.

- Review the audit checklist with the supervisor on a daily basis.

- Analyze NCR data and work with employees to determine root cause and corrective action.

- Participate in the Supervisor daily gemba walk.

- Encourage department employees to suggest safety and process improvements. Work with them to implement. Maintain project visibility and status using the project board.

- Assist the supervisors with new operator training and evaluating new employees.

- Assist the Mixing Operations Manager with data collection and process optimization studies.

- Conduct rheological and hardness measurements on each batch of rubber produced. Maintain a log of approved and/or rejected batches.

- Compile mixing and test data for troubleshooting production quality, processing issues and making improvements.

- Escalate standard work compliance, equipment or safety issues to the Compounding Supervisors.

- Function as a resource on an as needed basis to provide visual quality opinion / inspection of product.

The successful 3rd Shift Lab/ Process Technician candidate will have:

- 1- 2 years working in a Process Tech position (or similar) preferably within the rubber and plastics industry.

- High School diploma required, Associate degree a plus.

- Ability to read, interpret and explain work instructions, job instructions and standard work.

- Excellent organizational and follow-through skills.

- Interpersonal skills – interested and able to develop and maintain strong relationships through technical knowledge, personality, and communication.

- Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Minitab programs and experience using rubber test equipment is helpful

- A collaborative demeanor, able to create teamwork and mutual respect between departments and shifts.

- Strong work ethic – a self-starter with a “can-do” attitude.
