Job Duties and Responsibilities

Position Summary:

The Broadcast Engineer is responsible for performing regular and preventative maintenance on all broadcast equipment. This includes performing regular software and hardware updates. Broadcast Engineers must be extremely knowledgeable regarding all broadcast technology in order to effectively care for equipment and ensure that it does not fail.

Often working within time-sensitive environments or for live broadcasts, the Broadcast Engineer must be able to quickly troubleshoot and diagnose video and audio issues. They may also have to communicate with third parties, such as the equipment vendors and or program providers, in order to troubleshoot and resolve technical issues.

Once a problem is diagnosed, the Broadcast Engineer, sometimes in conjunction with other team members, is responsible for finding a solution and completing repairs to the equipment until it is functioning well again. Often these repairs must be completed in a timely manner.

In order to stay updated with changing technologies and maintain excellent broadcast quality, the Broadcast Engineer must come up with solutions for continual broadcast improvement. This includes providing the company or studio with recommendations for equipment updates, enhancements and modifications, and then performing them. Broadcast Engineers also make suggestions for new technology and equipment when necessary.

Responsibilities:
  • Troubleshoots complex signal paths and exercises corrective actions or workarounds to keep signals on air.
  • Ensures baseband video and audio signals are properly conformed to industry specification.
  • Responds to trouble notification from other teams and quickly engages in identifying the fault and applying corrective actions or escalating to next available support level.
  • Installs, maintains and repairs to component level various types of television broadcast equipment; which include both baseband and compressed disciplines.
  • Trains other team members on systems and workflows.
  • Performs periodic maintenance procedures such as system health checks and proactive system restarts as well as software upgrades.

Skills, Experience and Requirements

Basic Requirements:
  • Strong Computer Skills
  • Basic understanding of IT Networking, Firewalls and Fiber optics.
  • Ability to read and interpret schematics and signal flow diagrams.
  • Flexibility with regard to work schedule. Must be able to work various shift schedules including overnight and weekends.
  • Must be able to maneuver through tight and low ceiling spaces. Occasionally needs to crawl through computer floor and above ceiling cable grid areas.
  • Lifting - Ability to move or lift 75 lbs. Frequently moves various equipment into and out of their assigned racks.
  • Must have the ability to distinguish gradations in color.
  • Willingness to view and support television signals that include adult content without objections.
  • Must be able to stand for extended periods and reach heights of up to 7 feet.
  • Must be able to communicate via 2-way radio.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure, have excellent time management skills and the ability to recall extensive technical knowledge quickly.


Qualifications:
  • BA/BS preferred. 0-3 years of progressive related experience.
  • Must be able to solve complex problems in a timely manner.
  • Experience with deploying and integrating broadcast video and audio components typical in Master Control environment. i.e Servers, switcher, routers, monitors.

Salary Range

Compensation: $57,400.00/Year - $82,000.00/Year
