JOB SUMMARY

This position participates in the maintenance and repair of the wastewater collection and treatment system.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Operates wastewater treatment machinery and equipment; monitors SCADA system and makes operational adjustments as required; maintains and repairs mechanical, and other systems; assists in installing plant equipment.
  • Inspects sanitary sewer system using video equipment; cleans sewer lines as needed.
  • Maintains and repairs lift station equipment.
  • Repairs manholes and sewer lines.
  • Maintains record of work performed; completes incident reports.
  • Samples and inspects oil and sand interceptors for industries; conducts grease trap inspections.
  • Calibrates and maintains laboratory equipment.
  • Composts biosolids and yard waste.
  • Collects and analyzes laboratory samples.
  • Responds to customer and contractor service calls.
  • Prepares a variety of regular and special reports; maintains related records.
  • Performs sewer collection system maintenance and repairs; repairs leaks in sewer system.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Knowledge of wastewater plant operations principles and processes.
  • Knowledge of wastewater treatment rules, regulations, standards, and principles.

  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of wastewater sample collection and analysis.
  • Skill in the operation of assigned vehicles and equipment.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS

The supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the final results.

Guidelines include OSHA regulations, state and federal environmental regulations, and department policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORK

  • The work consists of related technical duties. Inclement weather and field conditions contribute to the complexity of the position.
  • The purpose of this position is to operate, maintain, and repair the city’s wastewater collection and treatment system. Successful performance contributes to the efficiency and effectiveness of utility services.

  • Contacts are typically with coworkers, customers, plumbers, vendors, contractors, and the general public.
  • Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, walking, bending, crouching or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects, climbs ladders, uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity, distinguishes between shades of color, and utilizes the sense of smell.

  • The work is typically outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, contagious or infectious diseases, and irritating chemicals. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

None.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • A high school diploma or GED AND one (1) year of relevant construction, plumbing, building, and/or system maintenance or closely related experience OR any equivalent combination of experience and/or education from which comparable knowledge, skills, and abilities have been achieved.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a State of Wyoming Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) Level 1 Wastewater and a Level I Collection certification within one year of employment.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a valid State of Wyoming Class B Commercial Driver’s License with tanker endorsement within six months of hire.
  • May be required to obtain other licenses and/or certifications required to perform the functions of the position within a specified period of time.
  • May be required to lift and/or carry heavy, bulky supplies, materials, and/or other items weighing up to 45 pounds.
  • May be exposed to dangerous machinery, potential physical harm, extreme weather conditions, and infectious diseases.
  • May be required to work outside the traditional work schedule.
  • May be subject to call-out and/or call-back.
