ABOUT THE JOB

The ACLU seeks a full-time position of Immigrants' Rights Attorney in the ACLU's National office in Jackson, WY.

Reporting to the Executive Director of the ACLU of Wyoming, the Immigrants' Rights Attorney will be responsible for expanding the ACLU of Wyoming's work to protect the rights of immigrants. The Immigrants' Rights Attorney will have three primary responsibilities: (1) educate immigrant communities and the general public about immigrant rights; (2) identify systemic government abuses of power that the ACLU should challenge through advocacy or litigation; (3) represent immigrants in bond hearings and hold government agencies accountable to the rule of law. This is a two-year grant-funded position.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Represent immigrants in bond hearings, document abuses by immigration enforcement agents and the police, hold government agencies accountable to the rule of law, and other issues that arise on which the ACLU can have impact
  • Identify and develop new litigation and other advocacy projects by conducting factual, legal and strategic analysis and devising relevant theories and materials
  • Litigate immigrants' rights cases, including legal research; fact development; working with clients; drafting pleadings, briefs and legal memoranda; engaging in discovery and motion practice; and conducting evidentiary hearings and oral arguments in the trial and appellate courts
  • Prepare Freedom of Information Act requests and demand letters to government officials about abuses of power
  • Work with advocacy and policy colleagues to develop public education and other advocacy materials on immigrants' rights
  • Articulate ACLU views to a variety of audiences, through public speaking, traditional and social media, and other means
  • Travel as required for litigation, conferences, and other advocacy opportunities

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • J.D. degree
  • Admission to practice in Wyoming; if not currently admitted, agreement to become admitted within one year of hire
  • Commitment to and familiarity with immigrants' rights, racial and social justice, and civil liberties issues
  • Commitment to the mission of the ACLU
  • Demonstrate a commitment to diversity within the office using a personal approach that values all individuals and respects differences in regards to race, ethnicity, age, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, religion, disability and socio-economic circumstance
  • Commitment to work collaboratively and respectfully toward resolving obstacles and/or conflicts

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • 5+ years of experience in immigration law
  • Superior analytic, research, and writing skills
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct complex legal analysis and fact-finding
  • Proven ability to work independently as well as within a team
  • Fluency in Spanish (written and spoken) preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal and verbal communication skills
  • Self-motivated with the ability to take initiative, manage a variety of tasks and see projects through to completion
  • Ability to work with a wide range of people and foster a team environment
  • Willingness to travel
