The Director of Finance and Administration provides overall leadership and support of the financial and accounting operations of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and reports directly to the Dean. The Director, serving as the chief business officer, partners with peers across the institution in the financial management of and planning for the strategic use of funds.
The Director is responsible for the College’s finance functions including daily accounting operations; preparing annual operating and capital budgets; developing financial and project cost reports and analyses; and developing rolling operating, capital and project forecasts. Additionally, the Director leads a team of professional and administrative support staff and in partnership with College leadership, works on developing goals, objectives, policies and procedures; supervising, coordinating, and evaluating activities; and performing personnel administration functions for financial staff.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Interprets accounting principles and ensures that the general accounting records and controls are maintained in a manner that is compliant with the overall finance function of the University
Ensures the timely and accurate accounting and reporting of the College’s use of operating, designated, gift, endowment and plant funds in accordance with institutional, GAAP, and other applicable financial reporting requirements
Ensures the accuracy, completeness, and integrity of financial data
Establishes and participates in the development, modification and execution of policies that affect immediate operations and may have institution-wide effect
Identifies and pursues opportunities to optimize effectiveness
Contributes to the development of objectives and long-range strategic goals for the organization
Prepares complex reports for federal granting agencies. Works with other units to maintain financial data for University’s land grant mission reporting requirements
Oversees the approval and processing of revenue, expense, and transfer transactions ensuring compliance with university policies and regulations while maintaining appropriate internal control safeguards
Trains, monitors, evaluates or corrects the day-to-day financial/personnel operations of College financial staff. Maintains an organization structure and staffing to effectively accomplish established goals and objectives; recruits and supervises staff, including work allocation, problem resolution; motivates employees to achieve peak productivity and performance
Ensures compliance with policies and procedures for budgeting, procuring and funding projects managed by the College on behalf of the university; provides oversight and ensures compliance with university purchasing and financial policies in the procurement and contracting of project related services
Ensures compliance with Human Resource policies and procedures
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
A minimum of 7 years of experience in a financial or administrative management position in a large organization/institution
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Experience with sponsored projects and grants
Supervisory and personnel experience
Familiarity with capacity grants and federal land grant university systems
Strong analysis, problem solving, and critical thinking skills
Attention to detail
Supervisory skills
Experience developing complex financial models, data analyses, and pro-forma analyses
Strong written and oral communications skills, including the ability to communicate effectively with staff, peers, and other university and outside contacts
Thorough understanding of accounting processes and systems including purchasing, accounts payable, inventory control, accruals, cost accounting and reporting
