Position Summary

Under the direction of the Dean of Students, the Director of Residential and Student Life provides strategic leadership, program development, and day-to-day management of CWC Residential Facilities and Student Activities to foster a comprehensive student engagement program intended to enrich the campus experience of Central Wyoming Community College.


Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Residential Life

  • Manage day-to-day housing operations, including maintaining student records, room assignments, supervising housing activities and residential life programming activities, etc.
  • Develop and manage housing department budgets including managing cash expenditures, reviewing and analyzing financial reports for the student housing.
  • Coordinate, conduct, and document required safety drills for student housing facilities.
  • Supervise resident assistants (RAs) to include recruiting, selection, training, and termination. Conduct orientation for RA’s. Establishing a program rotation and desk duty schedule. Train resident assistants on policies to ensure consistent enforcement.
  • Maintain, update and enforce housing policies and procedures. Educate and inform students about college policies and procedures, particularly housing policies and procedures.
  • Monitor resident compliance with terms and conditions of housing contract and housing handbook and provide oversight such that these conditions are administered consistently and fairly.
  • Attend to student needs, including being attentive to changes in behavior, etc., and initiate referrals to the college counselor. Advise Dean for Student Affairs and other appropriate administrators of potential disciplinary problems as they arise.
  • Apply disciplinary procedures when conditions of housing are not met by residents and require immediate action.
  • Assist area agencies, including law enforcement, fire department, etc., in responding to events, emergencies, etc. in the student housing facilities.

Student Life

  • Develop and manage a visionary activities evening and weekend program that is fun, safe, growth-oriented, and supports the mission of the college.
  • Develop opportunities for students to participate in co-curricular student experiences.
  • Develop and manage activities department budgets including managing cash expenditures, reviewing and analyzing financial reports.
  • Provide coordination and oversight of student activities to ensure safe and proper supervision, including supervising student employees and volunteers, maintaining equipment, ensuring safe use and security of equipment, tracking usage of operations and equipment, etc.
  • Supervise CWC Student Government to include recruiting, selection, training, and termination. Conduct orientation for Student Senators. Train student senators on CWC policies and procedures.
  • Oversees the student life social media account.
  • Develops and leads new student orientation.
  • Manages the campus closet to serve all CWC students.

General Operations

  • Serve as a college representative to residents and visitors, providing tours and responding to inquiries as needed.
  • Represent the college in a positive manner with prospective, current and former students, employees, officials, and the community.
  • Attend and participate in Student Affairs staff committee activities, e.g. , Senior Visit Day, etc.
  • Operate within the framework established by CWC’s policies, procedures, and practices.
  • Serves on the Student of Concern Team
  • Perform other reasonably related duties as directed or assigned.
  • Assists the Dean of Students with special projects

Position Specifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education
    • Bachelor's degree in a related field from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning recognized by the US Department of Education.
  • Experience
    • Three years of experience in campus housing or related field in a higher education environment or other related industry.
  • Licenses/Certifications
    • Possess a valid Wyoming driver’s license and be insurable by the college’s insurance carrier. Be certified in First Aid and CPR, or ability to be certified within 90 days of hire.
  • Equivalency Statement
    • Equivalent combinations of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and abilities can be acquired may be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Desired Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in a related field from a regionally accredited institution of higher learning recognized by the US Department of Education.
  • Knowledge of processes that support community college student success.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of and ability to follow CWC policies, procedures and practices.
  • Considerable knowledge of student housing best practices and operations.
  • Considerable knowledge of college-student housing compliance requirements.
  • Knowledge of behavioral intervention best practices.
  • Proficient in the use of word processing, database, and presentation applications, specifically Microsoft Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Datatel.
  • Ability to work under potentially stressful conditions and be able to get along well with a diverse population.
  • Ability to relate with a diverse group of people in a professional, helpful manner and to maintain composure when faced with difficult situations.
  • Ability to effectively supervise the work of the resident assistants.
  • Ability to effectively identify and resolve problems in a timely manner within established policies.
  • Ability to organize, prioritize, and follow multiple projects and tasks through to completion within established deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently with frequent interruptions and with limited supervision.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with students and staff regarding housing policies and operations and student behaviors.
  • Demonstrated ability to be accountable for decision making and for being dependable and reliable.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.
  • Possesses strong, effective interpersonal skills.

Level of Supervision

This position operates under the direct supervision of the Dean of Students

  • This position has the option to live in on-campus facilities but it is not required.

Equipment Used

  • The essential functions of this job require use of standard office equipment, telephone, and radio communication devices.

Physical Requirements

  • Must be able to move up furniture weighing up to 25 lbs. for the purpose of arranging furniture within dorm rooms, as required.

Environmental Conditions

  • Work is performed in an office environment and college housing setting. Work requires evening and weekend hours, and being on-call 24 hours per day.
