    This position serves as an Occupational Therapist for the Sheridan VA Healthcare System. The Occupational Therapist performs patient evaluations, establishes treatment plans, and provides treatment for a wide variety of patient referrals from both the acute care units and outpatient clinic.


    Responsibilities

    • Evaluates a wide variety of patients as appropriate for their diagnoses to determine current levels of functioning and areas of impairment. Evaluations may include the following areas: activities of daily living, strength, range of motion, and sensation, perception, and cognition.
    • Based on the evaluation and collaboration with the patient, treatment team, and significant others (when appropriate), develops a treatment plan and measurable goals designed to restore function, compensate for dysfunction, and minimize debilitation.
    • Implements occupational therapy plans to meet the patient's rehabilitation objectives.
    • Evaluates, prescribes or trains in the use of wheelchairs and power mobility devices.
    • Coordinates evaluations, orders, and assembly of systems in collaboration with a local vendor.
    • Participates in interdisciplinary care planning meetings, as needed, and makes recommendations for discharge planning.
    • Trains family members/caregivers in handling of patients.
    • Acts as a consultant to other staff therapists in determining appropriate evaluation tools, methods, equipment, and treatment for complex cases.
    • Acts as a consultant to members of the treatment team on matters specific to Occupational Therapy.
    • Participates in developing Quality Improvement indicators, monitors QI activity, and provides statistical data as needed.
    • Communicates effectively with a diverse population including the patient's family members, members of the community and health care professionals.

    Participation in the seasonal influenza program is a condition of employment and a requirement for all Department of Veterans Affairs Health Care Personnel (HCP). HCP are individuals who, during the influenza season, work in VHA locations where patients receive care or who come into contact with VA patients as part of their duties. VHA locations include, but are not limited to, VA hospitals and associated clinics, community living centers (CLCs), community-based outpatient clinics (CBOCs), domiciliary units, Vet centers and VA-leased facilities. HCP include all VA licensed and unlicensed, clinical and administrative, paid and unpaid, full- and part-time employees, intermittent employees, fee basis employees, VA contractors, students, researchers, volunteers, and trainees who work at these facilities.

    Qualifications

    To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/30/2019.
    Basic Requirements:

    United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

    English language: VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 2, Section D, Paragraph 5a, requires that applicants must be proficient in spoken and written English.

    Education: Graduate from a degree program in occupational therapy approved by the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE) or predecessor organizations to include an internship (supervised fieldwork experience required by the educational institution). The ACOTE is the only accreditation agency recognized by the United States Department of Education (USDE) and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). Degree programs may be verified by contacting the American Occupational Therapy Association website or at their office address: American Occupational Therapy Association, P.O, Box 31220, Bethesda, MD 20824-1220. NOTE: Effective January 1, 2005, ACOTE accredits only master or doctoral degree programs in occupational therapy.

    Certification/Examination. Possession of written documentation that the individual has passed the entry-level certification examination for OTs which is administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). NOTE: Effective January 1, 2007, candidates for certification as an Occupational Therapist Registered (OTR) must be a graduate from a post-baccalaureate accredited occupational therapy program approved by NBCOT or be a graduate from a degree program recognized by NBCOT or considered equivalent to the American Occupational Therapy education standard.

    State Licensure/Certification/Registration/Trademark (hereafter referred to as state regulatory requirement). The OT must hold a full, current, and unrestricted state license, certification, or registration or trademark to practice occupational therapy in a State, Territory, a Commonwealth of the United States (i.e., Puerto Rico), or in the District of Columbia. NOTE: The OT must maintain full, current and unrestricted license, trademark, registration, or certification as required by state statute. The majority of states have determined that licensure is the most effective approach to regulating occupational therapy practitioners. As of the date of this standard, 47 states, the District of Columbia, Guam, and Puerto Rico license OTs; two states-Hawaii and Michigan-have registration laws; and one state, Colorado, has a title protection trademark law.

    Grade Determinations: GS-11: In addition to meeting the basic requirements, completion of one year of progressively complex experience and a broader scope of experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS 9) directly related to the position being filled, OR 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a degree in occupational therapy or a directly related field.

    Individuals assigned as GS-11 OTs must demonstrate all of the following KSAOs:

    (a) Knowledge of advanced occupational therapy techniques to perform functions associated within the occupational therapy scope of practice.

    (b) Ability to communicate orally and in writing.

    (c) Ability to adapt assessment tools and treatment to the complexity of the diagnosis or disabilities and demonstrate the clinical reasoning necessary to identify the need for further in depth specific assessment of function and utilization of non-standard methods and techniques.

    (d) Knowledge of principles and techniques in the occupational therapy assessment and treatment of occupational, cognitive, and psychological functional deficits.

    (e) Ability to interact with patients, families, and other health care providers.

    (f) Ability to facilitate and instruct in-service and clinical training programs.

    (g) Knowledge and ability to apply all health and safety regulations to minimize and mitigate risks in the provision of patient care and environmental maintenance.
