    Duties

    Summary

    The Veterans Affairs Police Officer performs law enforcement and security duties pursuant to Title 38. The Police Officer performs a full range of duties by following and executing rules, regulations, or procedures covering law and rules enforcement, physical and personal security operations, patrol duties, control desk duty, coordination with local courts and crime prevention activities.


    Responsibilities

    May include but are not limited to:

    • Identify situations where criminal activity has occurred or is about to occur
    • Assess danger and threats, and take proper recourse
    • Use various special weapons and tactics to resolve security and law enforcement-related issues
    • Ensure compliance with and enforce a full range of Federal, state, territorial, and/or commonwealth, county and municipal laws, ordinances, rules and regulations
    • Conduct investigations and recurring security assessments
    • Identify security vulnerabilities and recommend changes in crime prevention programs
    • Utilize a special skill set to assist the needs of Veterans and de-escalate a crisis situation
    • Provide direction during natural disasters, terrorist acts, criminal activity and other emergency situations
    • Operate a variety of security equipment and systems

    Work Schedule: Compressed/Flexible Schedule candidates must be willing to work weekends, irregular work hours and extended hours if determined by the needs of the service.     Qualifications

    To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 07/27/2020.

    Time-In-Grade Requirement: Applicants who are current Federal employees and have held a GS grade any time in the past 52 weeks must also meet time-in-grade requirements by the closing date of this announcement. For a GS-5 position you must have served 52 weeks at the GS-6. The grade may have been in any occupation, but must have been held in the Federal service. An SF-50 that shows your time-in-grade eligibility must be submitted with your application materials. If the most recent SF-50 has an effective date within the past year, it may not clearly demonstrate you possess one-year time-in-grade, as required by the announcement. In this instance, you must provide an additional SF-50 that clearly demonstrates one-year time-in-grade.

    Note: Time-In-Grade requirements also apply to former Federal employees applying for reinstatement as well as current employees applying for Veterans Employment Opportunities Act of 1998 (VEOA) appointment.

    • Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:

    • GS-06 You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-05 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Creditable specialized experience may have been gained in work on a police force; through service as a military police officer; in working providing visitor protection and law enforcement in parks, forests, or other natural resource or recreational environments; in performing criminal investigative duties; or in other work that provided the required knowledge and skills. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to:
    • Engage in proactive patrolling based on criminal trends in order to maintain law and order
    • Provide protection of the employees, patients, and others who frequent facility
    • Empathize, engage and communicate with individuals to ensure a positive outcome
    • Following and executing regulations and procedures covering law and rules enforcement.
    • Assess danger and threats, and take proper action.

    Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

    Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
