    Summary


    This position is located in the Cardio-Pulmonary Department of the Primary Care Program at the Sheridan VA Medical Center (SVAMC), located in Sheridan, WY.

    Responsibilities

    • Incumbent will serve as the primary therapist in the sleep lab, setting up and monitoring sleep labs, performing routine maintenance and calibration of the sleep lab equipment, as well as, score and prepare reports for all sleep lab tests performed at the Sheridan VA Medical Center Sleep lab. As the primary therapist in the sleep lab, incumbent will manage the supplies in the lab.
    • Incumbent will serve as a respiratory therapist independently providing basic and advanced respiratory services to adults and geriatric patients. It is necessary for the therapist to be knowledgeable regarding the basic treatment of all age groups.
    • The Therapist plans, implements, and evaluates the effectiveness of respiratory care procedures and must be able to operate a variety of equipment including: mechanical ventilators, continuous positive pressure devices, pulmonary function, arterial blood gas equipment, oxygen monitors/analyzers and co-oximeters.
    • Incumbent may serve in the outpatient diagnostic section of the department performing other related duties incidental to the work described herein, including, but not limited to pulmonary function tests (PFTs), stress tests (treadmills), holter monitor scanning and application, event recorder monitoring, electrocardiograms (EKGs), and peripheral vascular studies.

    Work Schedule: Monday & Tuesday 1800 to 0730, and Wednesday 1830 to 0730 (40 hrs per week total)

    Qualifications

    To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/09/2019.
    Basic Requirements:

    • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
    • Registered Respiratory Therapist. Has a certificate as an RRT from the NBRC (National Board for Respiratory Care) and a registry number, or a certificate from another body which the NBRC recognizes as its credentialing equivalent. This includes registration based on either:

      • (1) Having fulfilled the requirements and passed the registry examination administered by the NBRC since 1983, or(
      • 2) Having fulfilled the requirements and passed the registry examination for a registered inhalation or respiratory therapist administered by the (1) National Board for Respiratory Therapy from July 1974 through 1982 or (2) American Registry of Inhalation Therapists from 1961 through June 1974.

    • English Language Proficiency. RRTs appointed to direct patient-care positions must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).

    Preferred Experience: The Therapist must have the knowledge and understanding of most testing skills performed by a sleep technician including complex and non-routine recordings.

The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders; Emotional and Mental Stability: The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs. Must complete annual Employee Health requirements, such as annual TB screening or testing, as a condition of employment.


    WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed primarily in a patient care setting and provides face to face interaction and treatment to patients. Many times, this position requires physical contact with patients: adequately lighted, temperature controlled, and ventilated. Office temperatures fluctuate periodically; involves everyday risks or discomforts which require normal safety precautions typical of such places as clinics, offices, meeting and training rooms or libraries; exposure to noise and dust on occasion. The work area is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures.
