    Summary

    This position is located within the Police Service at the Sheridan VA Health Care System (SVAHCS). The primary purpose of the position is to perform the essential functions of the job which include but are not limited to the suppression of crime and criminal activity, the protection of life and property, the apprehension and arrest of violators of criminal laws, the recovery of stolen property and the regulation of non-criminal conduct.

    Responsibilities

    Major Duties: Serves as a first level supervisor and may act as the Deputy Chief of Police having full delegated authority for technical and administrative management during any extended absence of the Deputy Chief of Police. Performs day-to-day supervisory functions over subordinate Police Service personnel while performing a variety of management assignments. Uses knowledge of a wide range of police and security concepts, principles and practices to review independently, analyze and resolve difficult and complex law enforcement problems. Works a shift providing supervisory coverage Monday through Friday as well as nights, weekends or holidays as needed. They ensure the organizations "vision" is integrated into the team's goals, strategies, activity plans and work products. Identifies problem areas and takes steps to resolve situations making notifications to higher level supervisors as required on more complex issues.

    You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:

    • Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-07 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Firs level supervisory/Personnel management, administrative management, investigation management, and Law enforcement.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

    Physical Requirements: The work requires, on a regular and recurring basis, considerable and strenuous physical exertion such as frequent climbing of multiple flights of stairs, running, lifting heavy objects over 50 pounds, crouching or crawling in restrictive areas during search or pursuit activities, or defending oneself or others against physical attack. Body armor must be worn on duty as well as Police equipment (pistol with extra ammunition, chemical weapon, expandable baton, handcuffs, radio, gloves, keys, etc) which must be regularly worn or carried. The wearing of this equipment significantly amplifies the physical strain experienced by the employee during physical exertion or during periods of inclement weather. Employees are regularly required to work long hours often spending extended periods of time on their feet.

    Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. VA may offer newly-appointed Federal employee's credit for their job-related non-federal experience or active duty uniformed military service. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
