The Northern Rockies SHRO in Yellowstone NP, Wyoming, is accepting applications through USAJOBS to recruit for one permanent, career-seasonal position of Park Ranger (Interpretation), GS-0025-07/09. Position may be filled a either grade level.
DUTY STATION: Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming
Under the guidance and direct supervision of Yellowstone's North District Supervisory Park Ranger (I), incumbent coordinates and carries out interpretive and visitor services duties to include providing information and interpretation at a visitor center and in field locations throughout the district. Responds to visitor phone calls, emails, and written correspondence about the park. Collects fees at a visitor center for park passports, fishing permits, Junior Ranger booklets, etc. Develops and provides informal and formal interpretation of park resources, including wildlife-themed topics, in busy and more remote areas of the park.
Determines staffing and funding needs, directs lower-graded employees' informal and formal interpretation, schedules employees, monitors information and services provided to visitors, provides training to new employees, and develops and/or revises standard operating procedures. Trains employees and coaches and audits interpretive and visitor services activities. Assists in the development of short and long-range plans for subdistrict interpretive and visitor services. Clarifies performance expectations for staff and clearly communicates through formal employee performance management system. Provides both formal and informal feedback and periodically evaluates employee performance.
Creates and fosters a safe work environment and culture. Includes risk assessments in all operational plans and decisions. Communicates safety information and updates to employees and the public. Reports all work-related accidents, injuries, illnesses, and/or near misses within deadlines and through required reporting systems. Identifies, monitors and reports resource conditions and/or problems that can be mitigated or corrected by immediate attention and/or help from others. Encourages visitor compliance with park rules through education and/or reporting problems to appropriate personnel. Recommends solutions and corrective actions related to specific resource problems.
Work is performed indoors and outdoors, in a visitor center and also exposed to extreme temperatures, rain, snow, wind, and direct sunlight. Standing for long periods of time, walking for distances up to ten miles daily, climbing and descending steep inclines, and bending and lifting moderately heavy items in a repetitive motion is required. Mental stress and physical fatigue occur due to high volume of public contacts, occasional emergency responses, and repetitive nature of visitor center and field work. Extreme physical exertion may be required while assisting with occasional search and rescue and other emergency response duties.
Duties will be developmental in nature if filled at the GS-07 grade level.
DUTY LOCATION: North District
Federal government housing may be available.
Physical Demands: Duties and responsibilities require long workdays and travel by all modes of transportation. Incumbent often must lift heavy boxes and equipment, move furniture and push or pull an 800-pound snowmobile. Work conditions include extreme heat or cold, high winds, rain or snow. The duties of the position require mental stamina and considerable physical exertion during peak visitation periods and emergencies. Incumbent will drive sedans, light trucks, SUV's and operate snowmobiles.
Working Conditions: Incumbent works in a northern mountainous park with fluctuations in temperatures from 100 degrees Fahrenheit in the summer to -60 degrees Fahrenheit in the winter. Snow depths during the winter may vary from two to eight feet. Elevations range from 5,000 to 11,000 feet. The emotional environment is most commonly one of high stress.
CAREER SEASONAL: A permanent, career seasonal position is a career status position with a seasonal work schedule. Like all permanent positions, are entitled to all benefits but do not provide employment on a year-round basis. Incumbent/s will be placed in a nonwork/nonpay status for four pay periods (8 weeks) within their service year (entrance on duty date). When in pay status, will work a full-time work schedule, 40 hours per week. Incumbent/s will placed in a nonwork/nonpay status during the months of November/December and in March/April for approximately a total of 8 weeks within their service year. Dates in nonpay status may be negotiable every service year and a career-seasonal agreement may be revised with supervisory approval.

Requirements
Credit will be given for all appropriate qualifying experience. For current Federal employees, if hours worked per week are not included on your resume, you must submit a non-award SF-50 as part of your application to be used to validate your work schedule and determine the amount of specialized experience that you will be granted. An award SF-50 will not be acceptable documentation for which to consider your amount of qualifying experience. For all other applicants who are not current federal employees, your resume must state either "full-time" (or "40 hours a week") or "part-time" with the number of hours worked per week to ensure proper crediting of specialized experience.
For periods of time that reflect military service, the DD-214 or Statement of Service is sufficient to meet the full and/or part-time hours requirement as the service dates will be reflected.
IMPORTANT NOTE: The GS-0025 Occupational Series consists of two-graded interval positions such as GS-05/07/09. Therefore, related federal government experience must also be in two-graded interval positions to be considered creditable. One-graded interval positions such as GS-04/05/06/07 in the GS-0303 and GS-0090 occupational series, may not be considered creditable experience for this position. 1. OPM QUALIFICATION STANDARDS FOR THE GS-0025-07 (May qualify based on experience and/or education):
A. EXPERIENCE: Must possess one year (1) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. Experience that demonstrated the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully perform the duties of the position to be filled. Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation on management, law enforcement, or other park-related work. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include the following: Park Ranger or tour leader, law enforcement or investigative work, Archeological or historical preservation research work, forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area, management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or other similar operations. OR,
B. EDUCATION: Must possess one (1) full academic year (18 hours) of progressively higher-level graduate education in one of the following fields: natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, wetlands ecology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. OR,
C. S.A.A: Must have attained a Superior Academic Achievement (S.A.A) in one of the following fields: natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, wetlands ecology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. OR,
D. EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION: Possess an equivalent combination of related experience and education. For example, 6 months of specialized experience (50% of the experience requirement), plus nine (9) semester hours of directly related graduate level education in an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education).

A. EXPERIENCE: Must possess one year (1) of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 grade level, in the Federal service. Experience that demonstrated the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to successfully perform the duties of the position to be filled. Experience may have been in technical, administrative, or scientific work, fish and wildlife management, recreation management, law enforcement, or other park-related work. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include the following: Park Ranger or tour leader, law enforcement or investigative work, Archeological or historical preservation research work, forestry and/or fire management work in a park, recreation, or conservation area, management, assistant, or program specialist work involving the development and implementation of policy related to protection, conservation, or management of park areas or similar operations. OR,
B. EDUCATION: Must possess two (2) full academic years (36 semester hours) of progressively higher-level graduate education, or a master's, or equivalent graduate degree in one of the following fields: natural resource management, natural sciences, earth sciences, history, archeology, anthropology, park and recreation management, wetlands ecology, or other closely related subjects pertinent to the management and protection of natural and cultural resources. OR,
C. EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION: Must possess an equivalent combination of related experience and education. For example, six (6) months of specialized experience (50% of the experience requirement), plus 27 semester hours of directly related graduate level college study in an accredited institution (50% of the qualifying education) equals 100% of this requirement.
NOTE: You must provide a copy of your college transcripts in support of your completed education. A copy of your official transcripts will be required before the entrance-on-duty date, if selected. Only related graduate education in excess of the creditable education at the next lower grade level can be applied to qualify for either grade level.
