Job DescriptionThis position is for a professional land surveyor that supervises and/or leads a field survey crew, operates survey instruments and collects information in the field; performs field quality control, performs office reductions, all types of survey computations; prepares TINs and surfaces, and final mapping in an AutoCAD environment. This is a full time position with a varied combination of field surveying, office production, survey crew oversight and related management duties.The person in this position is responsible for establishing official land, air space and water boundaries. Provides all types of survey research, computations, computer-aided survey drafting of topographic maps and plats, written descriptions of land for deeds, leases, and other legal documents in accordance with local, state, federal and project requirements. The position requires project management and some assistance with the functioning of the survey department. Reviews projects, performs quality assurance, reports progress through completion on each project assigned by the Director of Survey.Responsibilities

Supervise project field crew(s) and/or serve as field PLS Party Chief of a one to two-person field survey crews in urban and remote areas of Alaska, including scheduling, management and coordination of the daily and on-going operations of the field survey crew.

Work in the field on control, boundary, subdivision, topographic & design surveys, aerial mapping control and aeronautical surveys; may also perform hydrographic surveying.

Accurately run and adjust survey measuring instruments including digital levels, GPS equipment, and total stations with electronic data collecting capabilities.

Take accurate and clear field notes and sketches; perform note reduction.

Understand and identify basic sources of measurement errors.

Perform mathematical calculations and check field data in the field.

Perform data reduction, field note reduction, calculations, data checks and staking computations using survey programs and AutoCAD.

Using AutoCAD, perform map drafting and production of survey deliverables.

Project management duties including: quality control, project tracking from start to finish, client contact.

Perform quality control checks on each project, including computations, field book formats and content.

Perform project research, logistics and management, review plats and prepare legal descriptions.

Adhere to the company’s policies, safety plan and the project safety plan.

Mentor survey team, including professional & technical oversight and guidance.

This position has supervisory responsibilities.

Other duties that are pertinent to the department or unit's success also may be assigned.

Qualifications

Professional Land Surveyor registration required; Alaska registration must be obtained within 18 months of hire.

A minimum of five years surveying and mapping experience required, including a minimum of two years working in remote locations required; two years working in remote areas of Alaska is desired.

Must be proficient in the use of total stations, GPS receivers and data collectors, GPS reduction software such as Leica Geo Office.

Experience in AutoCAD with demonstrated survey drafting skills required.

Ability to read and understand survey drawings, plans & specifications.

Knowledge of principles of monumentation, staking and marking.

Must be proficient with MS Word and Excel.

Must possess good interpersonal skills, and effective written and oral communication skills.

Must be productive and positive working in both the field and office environments.

Attendance, punctuality and reliability are essential requirements.

Must be able and willing to travel within Alaska.

Position level will be determined by education, experience and skill set of the selected candidate.

A valid driver’s license and acceptable driving record for the past three (3) years to be eligible under company vehicle insurance policy.

Preferred Requirements

CFedS certification.

Hydrographic surveying experience.

Right-of-way mapping and parcel plat drafting.

Project management experience.
