Who We Are Seeking: This position involves fieldwork from April to October supporting CVTC’s fish research and passage projects. Duties may include wading, walking in remote areas, using sampling equipment, and collecting salmon via minnow traps, hook and line, dipnet, and electrofishing. Travel in small vehicles may also be required. Fieldwork may extend beyond October if needed. From November to April, the role focuses on collecting and interpreting Indigenous science (Traditional Ecological Knowledge/TEK), supporting science education and outreach, and assisting with other environmental projects. Overtime, evening, and weekend hours may apply.
Qualifications, Education & Experience:
At least 6 months of experience as a fisheries technician or working with Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) is preferred.
A Bachelor’s degree in Fisheries, Biology, Environmental Sciences, or a related field is preferred, or at least 4 years of relevant work experience may be substituted.
Strong interpersonal, customer service, and leadership skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse groups and work well in teams.
Excellent time management, organizational, and problem-solving abilities, with a track record of meeting deadlines.
Ability to thrive under pressure in fast-paced environments.
Physical fitness to work in streams/rivers for extended periods, including wading in waist-deep water and navigating slippery, fast-moving surfaces.
Capable of lifting up to 50 pounds as needed.
Proficient in basic computer skills, with the ability to quickly learn new software.
Certificates and Licenses: A valid Alaska Driver’s license and the ability to be insured on CVTC’s vehicle insurance policy is a requirement of this position.
