POSITION SUMMARY:
The Lamprey Field Technician will support the Chief Scientist and Project Coordinator in conducting research on the prey species of Cook Inlet beluga whales, with a focus on Pacific lamprey. The individual will work within a collaborative team, investigating how anadromous fish populations connected to the whale’s diet can influence species recovery efforts.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Collect and analyze data on prey species of Cook Inlet beluga whales, with field work occurring throughout the Cook Inlet region.
Run radio-tagging studies of Pacific lamprey.
Collect adult and juvenile Pacific lamprey samples from various locations around the Cook Inlet.
Surveying of Alaska Natives, fishermen, and community members to identify traditional knowledge and life histories of Cook Inlet beluga whale prey species. These activities may be completed in the field and/or in the office setting via telephone interview.
Identify lamprey through sonar and acoustics data.
Interact with stakeholders, including local agencies and tribal groups.
Performance, all other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED REQUIREMENTS:
Bachelor’s degree in biology, ecology, natural resource management, or a closely related field of study.
Demonstrated interest in marine biology, anadromous fish, indigenous ecological knowledge, eDNA analysis, and radio tagging.
Demonstrated experience collaborating with Alaskan Natives, local fisherman, and community members.
Demonstrated knowledge of field surveying techniques, tribal organizations, and the Cook Inlet region preferred,
Willing to learn statistical software for data analysis, management, and visualization.
Willing to travel to fishing sites and knowledge holder homes and community spaces, attend meetings, communicate with fisheries (commercial, subsistence, sport) and other knowledge-holders in person or remotely.
Individual may be exposed to various environmental conditions, including close work with wildlife, inclement weather, and travel via small aircraft, helicopter, and boat.
Must have a valid driver’s license and clean driving record.
Clean state and federal background check.

Schedule: Full-Time (40 hours/week)
Salary: $25.00 - $30.00 per hour DOE/E. Plus full benefits FEHB medical, dental, vision,
