Reports to: Center Store Manager

Position Summary

The Buyer ensures an organized and smoothly ran grocery department including ordering, pricing, and inventory control. The buyer motivates themself and their coworkers to guarantee the highest level of customer service and to meet department objectives for sales, margin and labor goals.

Responsibilities

Customer Service

- Exhibits exceptional service for customers and staff and ensures that all department staff is customer focused.

- Knows store layout and is aware of products in other departments.

- Remain abreast of changing owner/customer needs, new products, and effective selling techniques.

- Approaches and greets customers courteously, promptly, and with enthusiasm. Personally promotes products with samples, and serving suggestions.

Finance

- Ensure adequate supply and selection of products keeping out-of-stock to a minimum.

- Ensure accurate up-to-date price labeling of products.

- Work with Center Store Manager to establish a pricing structure that will ensure that department margin goals are met.

- Ensure accurate up-to-date records of cost.

- Regularly review financial reports and take corrective action as needed.

- Maintain records pertaining to shrink (e.g. markdowns, spoils, spills, etc.)

- Consistently achieves department margin goals. Know profit contributions of different sections. Keeps control of shrink. If doesn't reach goals, knows why and works with merchandising manager to improve margins.

- Monitors sales and responds to demand (media popularity, sales, seasons.) Ensures o/s signs in holes.

When possible, suggest alternatives to customers.

Merchandising

- Coordinate product selection, and cross merchandising of products with other departments.

- Conduct periodic price comparisons with other stores

- Displays well organized, logically grouped. Keeps product faced, displays full. Uses cross-merchandising and color breaks where applicable.

Management and Department Operations

- Develop systems and ensure their implementation to maintain accurate, updated records of product cost, production, and losses.

- Ensure that department display units, coolers, work areas, storage areas, and sales floor are in clean and orderly condition.

- Develop and revise the department’s standard operating procedures (SOP) as needed. Ensure staff is aware of and trained in department SOP’s

- Participate in Co-op quarterly inventory.

- Perform all other duties as assigned by Center Store Manager.

- Consistently achieves department turns goals. If doesn't reach goals, work with the Marketing Manager to promote or discontinue slow sellers.

- Out of stocks due to ordering problems are rare. When possible, cover suppliers' o/s from alternative sources or suggests alternative products. Makes information on o/s available to staff and customers.

- Orders appropriately to avoid loss. Follows up to ensure credit is received. Follows record-keeping procedures. ORDERS ARE PLACED EACH WEEK WITHOUT FAIL.

- Paperwork (Inventory, loss sheets, weekly and monthly specials).

- Turns in paperwork consistently on time and complete.

- Accurate piece counts (for non-pallet¬ized deliveries.) Requests supplier credits. Catches accounting errors, and supplier errors. Follows up to ensure supplier credits are accurate.

- Fills out log completely and accu¬rately. Catches and corrects errors in assigning departments. Accounting department can depend on her/him.

- Prices are checked periodically. Shelf tags agree with PLUs. Prices on sale items are coordinated with signs. No missing price tags.

- Calls in credits to suppliers and follows through to ensure credit is received.

- Assertive with suppliers while maintaining good rapport. Builds a relationship of mutual trust, in turn creating an expectation for quality service, promotional assistance, discounts and favorable terms.

- Both department retail and backstock areas are clean and orderly and comply with health and fire codes. Backstock doesn't infringe on other departments.
