Key Responsibilities:

As a deckhand, you and your captain will take guests on 8-hour fishing trips daily.

The deckhand will greet guests daily, showing them to the boat and assisting them with their belongings.

You will be responsible for teaching our guests the various fishing techniques.

You will be responsible for preparing tackle and gear. Including but not limited to ensuring that fishing rods, reels, bait, hooks, and other tackle are ready for use. This may involve rigging gear before the trip and making sure everything is in working order.

Handling lines and anchors in assistance to your captain.

Fileting, bagging, and organizing of all fish caught.

Keep up on routine boat maintenance and cleaning.

The deckhand will also be given odd jobs on days that are not spent deckhanding: bait preparation, maintenance and cleaning, and other assigned tasks.

Most importantly, the deckhand will ensure that each client has an enjoyable day on the water.

Get along and be friendly, offer your help to your charter guests and captains.

Deckhands are team players and are always available to help with any project.

Job Details:

Position Title: Deckhand

Compensation: $140-180 daily

Employment type: Full time

Dates of Employment: End of May through first week of September

Pay Schedule: This is a position that is paid a daily rate. You work as a subcontractor and receive a 1099. You are covered by Worker's Compensation Insurance.

Transportation: Your point of hire is Homer, Alaska. The job starts and ends in Homer, Alaska. We do not pay airfare from the lower 48 to Homer.

Daily Schedule: Early days and sometimes late evenings are the norm. This is a 7 day per week position. We do try and give floating rest days to average 1 day every 7, however, we are a fishing lodge and aim to serve our guests 100% first.

Dress Code: Clean, neat and well-groomed is the standard. A professional appearance reflects the image we are looking for. We supply uniforms that are required wear. You will be required to bring specific items. The dress code is Jimmie Jack’s Lodge logo shirts and hats.

Qualifications

The Jimmie Jack Fishing Co. hires only the best professionals in the business.  We pay a premium salary for experienced, seasoned deckhands. 

At least 18 years of age at the time of hire.

Valid Driver’s License.

Experience fishing on the ocean or time spent on ocean boats (preferred).

Ability to carry up to 50 pounds up and down harbor ramps.

Ability to lift fish of 100 pounds or more from water onto the boat deck.

A person who can present themselves in a professional manner, prove to us they can be helpful, and communicate with our guests by passing on their fishing skills. 

Knowledge or willingness to learn how to properly handle all fishing gear for various techniques (bottom fishing, trolling and jigging).

Knowledge or willingness to learn in releasing fish unharmed.

Ability to demonstrate to guests how to fish.

Knowledge in telling guests the history of or facts about halibut, rockfish, lingcod and salmon, and the life cycle of each

Know how to tie basic knots such as bowline, clove hitch and uni.

Our boats and equipment are above average, and we require employees to keep them that way. We expect superior performance from our employees, in personal hygiene, professional contact with our customers and relations with other employees. The most important factors that we look for when hiring a person are a good attitude, honorable, and high work ethic. If you aren't willing to put in long hours, this is not the place for you. The position requires employees who are honest, presentable, personable and friendly. We require people who can present themselves in an outgoing manner. We expect good manners, good grooming and a professional appearance, above reproach.
