AmeriCorps Award: Fellows are eligible for am AmeriCorps Education Award upon successful completion of the program. Fellows also receive federal non-competitive eligibility for 2 years following completion of the fellowship.

Program Basics:

In addition to protecting and managing Americas national parks, the National Park Service (NPS) also operates programs that extend throughout the nation to connect all Americans to their parks, trails, rivers, and other special places. The Rivers, Trails, and Conservation Assistance (RTCA) program helps community groups, nonprofits, state and local governments, and tribes plan parks and trails, conserve and improve access to rivers and natural areas, and create recreation opportunities through locally led partnerships.

This position will be located at Buffalo National River in Harrison, Arkansas. The position will be located with National Park Service staff at park headquarters. Some shared NPS park housing should be available. Due to the remote aspects of the position location, a personal vehicle is advised.

Duties & Responsibilities:

This position will be a shared position between Buffalo National River and the NPS RTCA Program. Candidate will work with park managers to map park facilities using GIS. Candidate will support park staff with conceptual design of trail, trailhead, river access areas, and various park infrastructure projects. Candidate will work with a wide range of National Park Service divisions and programs. This fellowship will also work with the partnership program: Rivers, Trails and Conservation Assistance Program (RTCA). Candidate will network with recreation projects across the State of Arkansas and Missouri. Candidate will also support the Midwest Regional Office in Omaha Nebraska on a variety of recreation projects working outside of National Park areas. Candidate will support other National Park Service areas in Arkansas.

Ability to draw, create maps

Ability to assist park staff/facility manager with conceptual site design

Ability to create design sections, perspectives and perform field inventory work

Ability to think critically and creatively

Excellent written and oral communication skills

Ability to work effectively with a variety of people and develop strong partner networks

Strong organizational skills

Completion of a Bachelors degree is required.

Coursework or experience in planning, community/rural studies, public health, environmental education, landscape architecture, geography, recreation management, or related field

Experience with or ability to learn one or more of the following software programs is desirable: ArcGIS, Adobe Creative Suite

Mandatory Requirements:

Ability to meet deadlines and communicate to supervisor when assistance is needed/desired.

Minimum age is 18, maximum age is 30.

Possession of a current valid drivers license

Must be a US Citizen, National, or Lawful Permanent Resident Alien of the United States

Fellows will be required to submit semiannual reports and a final report during their year of service.
