DescriptionThis senior-level position is responsible for overall design duties in completing project designs, including working with Project Managers, Engineers, Design Coordinators, Designers, Senior Drafters and Drafters to collect design data and develop projects from initial planning stages to final engineered design packages. Tasks include coordinating project related tasks with other designers and drafters and preparing plans in accordance with client, local, state and federal specifications. The Sr. Designer should be able to design various systems independently and independently generate plans, sections and details that meet all specifications. A Sr. Designer should have the ability to work in multiple programs including AutoCad and Microstation. A Pipeline Sr. Designer must also evaluate field conditions and routing piping and coordinate with the Project Managers and Engineers to ensure that a consistent design is developed. Drafts detailed dimensional drawings including using independent judgment to determine the required elevations, CAD standards, detail of view for plans, and two-line drawings as required for determining the placement and completion of gas and liquids pipeline and associated facilities including the development of detailed bills of materials.Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Conducting field site visits, as necessary, to verify and gather data to develop project plans.

Assisting Project Manager and Design Coordinator in tracking drawing progress.

Calculating dimensions and ensuring consistency throughout the design package.

Determine and make recommendations for the required drafters and designers for a particular project and distributing work to other drafters and designers and assigning the work.

Leading a design team to meet project design package deliverables ensuring consistent design drawings from all team members.

Conducting, training, supervising and instructing drafters in the completion of basic drafting portions of projects.

Determining placement of piping, and type of piping and materials in accordance with client requirements and local, state and federal standards.

Utilizing independent discretion and judgment in constructing dimensional relationship of one part to another and a relationship of various parts to entire project, utilizing knowledge of engineering practices and mathematics.

Creating preliminary and detailed sketches of proposed plans utilizing manual drawing techniques as well as utilizing computer-assisted design/programs – AutoCad and Microstation.

Applying knowledge and experience within the gas industry, including applicable standards to determine design plans.

Utilizing survey data to develop appropriate designs and to communicate topographical information to project stake-holders.

Modifying drawings as required by customer and/or existing structures, pipelines, and easements.

Determining whether existing piping on the site needs to be replaced or relocated due to existing structures and easements.

Evaluating and determining placement of piping and other structures (i.e. if the piping should be placed under roadways, etc. in evaluating current utilities on the site, easements, and local requirements).

Creating as-built drawings upon completion of project.

Qualifications

An Associate of Applied Science degree (AAS) in Design and Drafting Technology or similar science-based license or certificate from an accredited and approved program at the higher education level.

Strong working knowledge of AutoCad and Microstation software.

Ten years prior experience required in design in the gas or liquids pipeline industry resulting in advanced knowledge/skills in the pipeline industry.

Familiarity with Barlow’s formula, hydro test stress, fluid velocity and other simple formulas to ensure sound designs.

Ability to perform design drafting in a 3D environment is a plus.

Knowledge of SmallWorld and/or ESRI GIS platforms is a plus.

Basic knowledge of applicable gas and liquids regulations and industry codes.

Knowledge of Microsoft Outlook, Excel and Word.

Basic knowledge of pipe, valves and fittings.

Strong work ethic with desire to work in a production environment.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:Must possess mobility to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer, and to attend meetings at various sites within and away from the Firm; must also be able to work at a desk for long periods of time (2-3 hours); strength to lift and carry materials weighing up to 25 pounds; vision to read printed materials and a computer screen; and hearing and speech to communicate in person and over the telephone.Job Location: Los Angeles - Los Angeles, CAEducation Level: 4 Year Degree
