DESCRIPTION:
Under direction from the Fleet Supervisor, inspect, diagnose, locate and repair mechanical deficiencies on City automobiles, trucks, turf and golf equipment, busses and a variety of diesel, compressed natural gas, and gasoline powered vehicles and equipment; perform thorough diagnostic procedures on a variety of complex mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems through use of visual inspections and specialized testing equipment and devices.
DUTIES:
Adjust, repair or rebuild diesel, gasoline and CNG engine components, including electronic fuel injection and computerized engine control systems.
Service and repair cooling, ignition, power steering, suspension, exhaust, and lighting systems.
Replace or repair transmissions, differentials, clutches, suspensions and all other parts and equipment found to be faulty.
Diagnose, repair, adjust, and replace brake systems including anti-lock, disc, hydraulic and air brakes to include machining of brake drums and rotors
Diagnose, repairs, and replace such components as generators, compressors, distributors, relays, lights, alternators, starters, and switches.
Design and install specialized mechanical and electrical accessories for all types of equipment and vehicles in city fleet.
Design and install electrical circuitry.
Develop wiring diagrams and troubleshooting charts.
Maintain work, time, and material records through the use of computerized fleet maintenance database.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Three (3) years of experience or formal education with an Associate's Degree or Certificate in Automotive and/or Diesel repair technology from an accredited college or technical trades institute. Availability to work various hours is required. Formal education in both Automotive and Diesel repair technology preferred. Ability to obtain ASE Automobile and Heavy Truck Master Certifications is required. Formal or informal education or training which ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance. Possession of, or ability to obtain within six (6) months from hire, a Colorado Class B Commercial Driver License.
Knowledge of: current technology, electronics, tools, equipment, and procedures used in the diagnosis, overhaul, repair and adjustment of gas and diesel-powered vehicles and specialized equipment.
Ability to: perform a full range of mechanical tasks under normal supervision; use and maintenance of a variety of shop tools and equipment; read and comprehend complex written repair manuals and other written and oral instructions.
Physical Requirements: Primary functions require maintaining physical condition necessary for moderate lifting and carrying; walking, standing, bending and kneeling for prolonged periods of time; operating and maintaining motorized equipment and vehicles.
