POSITION HIGHLIGHTS:

Location: 317 Bow Lane, Middletown, CT

Work Hours: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week

Work Shift: First shift, 7:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.

Work Schedule: Tuesday through Saturday

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:

Meeting and greeting visitors and funeral directors, setting up and breaking down for special events, and assisting with traffic control.

Assisting with funerals through operations such as: digging cremation graves, opening, interring and closing of columbarium niches, closing of graves, removal and resetting of federal markers, and installation and removal of ground protection devices.

Maintaining the grounds through: mowing, string trimming, fertilizing and weed control, growing plants, maintaining the various trees, snow removal, maintenance of buildings and cleaning restrooms.

Operating various equipment and vehicles, including: dump tucks of less than 5-tons, complex mowers, tractors and skid steers.

The State Veterans Cemetery (https://portal.ct.gov/DVA/Pages/Cemetery-Rules-and-Code-of-Conduct) in Middletown is the largest state-operated veterans cemetery in Connecticut. It is under the administrative control of the Connecticut Department of Veterans Affairs and its Commissioner. PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)

In a state agency this class is accountable for performing duties a substantial amount of time (75%) in one or both of the following areas:

Transportation of individuals serviced by the agency;

Grounds care (outside services) equipment operation.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Any experience and training which provide the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Experience in groundskeeping

Experience operating mowing and landscape equipment

Experience operating an excavator

Experience driving dump trucks under a 5-ton rating, including trucks with sanding and plow attachments

Experience providing customer service with the grieving public

Experience restoring damaged masonry work

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility, visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness as to be able to perform the duties.

A physical examination may be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Incumbents in this class may be required to lift moderate to heavy weights; may be exposed to extreme weather conditions and risk of injury from equipment and assaultive and/or abusive patients and/or clients.

The appointing authority may require completion of an asbestos removal program consistent with EPA guidelines for operations and maintenance during employment in this class. Incumbents may be required to use protective equipment such as respirators and safety goggles.
