Position Summary:
Indian Mountain School (IMS) is seeking a dependable and versatile Building and Grounds Generalist to support the maintenance and operations of our 600-acre campus and 210,000 square feet of facilities in Lakeville, Connecticut. This is a full-time, hands-on position reporting directly to the Director of Buildings & Grounds and working closely with the Facilities team, faculty, staff, contractors, and vendors to ensure the smooth day-to-day function of all school buildings and grounds.
The Building and Grounds Generalist will be responsible for maintaining high standards of safety, cleanliness, and functionality across campus. Core responsibilities include assisting with routine and preventative maintenance, performing repairs related to electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems, supporting custodial needs when necessary, and helping to maintain the overall appearance and safety of the grounds. This role requires effective communication, adaptability, and a collaborative mindset, as the Generalist will regularly interact with students, faculty, administrators, and external service providers.
Essential Functions:
Maintain all school buildings and grounds to ensure optimal use and appearance.
Ensure all work aligns with IMS standards, safety protocols, and compliance guidelines.
Operate all maintenance equipment and machinery safely and effectively.
Communicate professionally with faculty, staff, students, families, and vendors.
Adapt to changes, respond to emergencies, and take initiative on assigned tasks.
Support and uphold the school’s mission and the value of education.
General Responsibilities:
Perform routine maintenance and repairs across campus facilities.
Prioritize safety, health, and comfort for students and staff in all operations.
Lead or assist with installations and preventative maintenance of:
o Electrical, plumbing, and HVAC systems
o Interior and exterior building elements
o Groundskeeping and landscaping tasks
Assist with moving materials and equipment across campus.
Provide custodial coverage as needed.
Work occasional overtime during emergencies or weather events.
Maintain accurate records, including daily work orders and invoice entry.
Comply with all health, safety, and school policies.
Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent.
Experience in building, facilities, or grounds maintenance (preferred, but open to personal experience only/entry level)
Strong desire for continued learning and skill development.
Basic computer proficiency (work order systems, inventory software, required online trainings).
Ability to read and understand chemical labels and safety documentation (MSDS).
Valid driver’s license and ability to meet school insurance requirements.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift/carry/move materials 50+ lbs.
Physical stamina for climbing, bending, kneeling, crawling, and working at heights.
Comfortable working both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions.
Tolerance for dusty, noisy, and occasionally odorous environments.
Ability to operate vehicles and heavy equipment safely.
