Position Details

First State National Historical Park is made up of seven sites spread throughout the entire state of Delaware. The park focuses on the story of first European settlement through the ratification of the United State Constitution. The National Park Service and First State National Historical Park is seeking an intern that will recruit for, manage communications for, and execute day-of tasks for all summer and early fall volunteer opportunities. They will create social media posts and website content for these opportunities, and will make sure necessary supplies are acquired, including health and safety/PPE items, and all volunteer forms are executed and filed correctly. The intern will help create the annual volunteer report for the park that goes to the regional and national offices.

The Stewards intern will focus on volunteer program development and management, stewardship and communications, and volunteer program record-keeping and annual reporting. Core responsibilities will include working with operating partners to assist with recruitment and retainment of volunteers for any park projects. This work will include supporting a core group of regular volunteers, celebrate their accomplishments, and help keep them motivated in their tasks (Trail Stewards, Stream Stewards, interpretive guides, etc.). The Stewards intern will also attend monthly regional Youth and Volunteer program calls, and stay up to date on national volunteer initiatives, ideas, and case studies. This position will include supporting any special event planning and execution, and attending meetings, workshops, and events as necessary throughout the year.

The Stewards intern will also maintain the active connection the park has with digital visitors on social media and on the website, with creative and frequent content updates. Lastly, the Stewards intern will maintain good files (volunteer agreements contain personally identifiable information (PII)) and keep up to date spreadsheets of volunteer hours. Tracking of data will allow for the creation of a yearly report and sharing information with park staff and thanking volunteers in a meaningful way.

The physical effort required is considered moderate to heavy and requires occasional lifting or handling of objects and/or materials over 75 lbs., while using the proper lifting procedures to avoid injury. The incumbent must frequently stand while on volunteer events, walk uneven terrain while working at park sites, and be exposed to hot and humid temperatures. They are required to step, bend, kneel, climb, and walk while performing the work in all manners of environmental conditions such as snow, mud, heat, and rain.

Minimum age is 18, maximum age is 30.
