Advanced Practice Psychiatric Nurse, Center for Counseling & Student DevelopmentJob no: 500745 College / VP Area:Vice President for Student LifeWork type: Staff Location: Newark Categories: Health Services, Full Time Pay Grade: 34EContext of the Job: The Center for Counseling and Student Development (CCSD) is a multi-disciplinary, comprehensive student learning and psychological wellbeing program providing a diverse array of culturally-informed services so that students can be more successful in their academic, personal, and career pursuits.  The CCSD is IACS accredited and sponsors three levels of doctoral level training for psychologists including an APA-accredited doctoral internship. The Center’s efforts focus on helping students reduce psychological symptoms, cope with life events and developmental tasks, improve interpersonal skills and relationships, and increase self-knowledge and problem-solving ability. The Center promotes equality and respect for individual and cultural differences, focuses on diversity and inclusion as well as encouraging on-going education regarding issues faced by students in marginalized/oppressed groups. CCSD is part of the Division of Student Life, which contributes to and facilitates critical learning and development within healthy, inclusive and supportive communities so that all students may thrive at UD and beyond. Under the limited direction of the Director, the clinical responsibilities include direct psychiatric evaluation and treatment of students including diagnosis, administering or prescribing of medications, and adjunctive psychotherapy. Referrals and crisis interventions are made appropriately to both on and off-campus services. Internal and external consultation support is provided to Student Health Service physicians/nurses/health educators/administrators, CCSD psychologists, Residence Life/Housing Directors and support staff, Student Life Vice President and Assistant Vice Presidents, University faculty and deans, parents, families, and private physicians/psychiatrists/ psychologists. The Advance Practice Psychiatric Nurse also provides supervision to doctoral interns and postdoctoral fellows in the CCSD. Major Responsibilities:

Responsible for delivery of psychiatric services to University of Delaware students, including psychiatric evaluations for various cognitive, emotional, developmental, social, and behavioral disorders by utilizing psychological tests, behavioral observations, family and medical histories, and interview data.

Determines nature and extent of mental disorder and formulates treatment program, utilizing a variety of psychotherapeutic methods and medications; evaluates, prescribes, monitors, and manages psychotropic medications.

Provides clinical supervision to the doctoral interns and postdoctoral fellows from the CCSD.

Responsible for mental health crisis interventions, to include assessment and diagnosis for commitment procedures as appropriate in cooperation with University departments and agencies outside the University.

Confers with patients, parents, families, and consulting psychiatrists/physicians in order to facilitate individualized, case-specific mental health care.

Provides outreach to University community (parents, families, students, faculty, staff) covering mental health issues.

Recommends appropriate referrals to medical and mental health specialists and other health care facilities for specialized care.

Provides consultation to Student Health Service medical staff, staff of the CCSD, Dean of Students, Residence Life, and Housing, as well as to University faculty and administrators concerned with students' mental health issues.

Provide outreach to others on campus. Initiate, develop, and provide student programs designed to enhance the intellectual, social, and personal growth of University students

Maintains timely and accurate psychiatric records.

Provides other appropriate duties as assigned by the Director of the CCSD.

Maintains professional licensure and professional competence through appropriate continuing education opportunities.

Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Master’s degree in Nursing and completion of courses specific to the Psychiatric Mental Health Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) track and three to five years related experience.

APRN, or appropriate comparable licensure in the state of Delaware, effective clinical training experience to include completion of a psychiatric residency.

Board certification, or board eligible, in advanced practice mental health required.

Effective interpersonal communication and human relation skills.

Previous college health or clinical group practice experience desirable.

Excellent interviewing and psychological evaluation skills

Knowledge of relevant diagnostic tests and procedures.

Ability to observe, assess and record symptoms, reactions and progress.

Advanced knowledge and understanding cultural competency and diversity issues is essential and should be shown through graduate coursework, publications, presentations, and/or skill in expressing such knowledge in person in an interview setting.

Knowledge of legal and ethical standards for the delivery of medical care, including FERPA.

Knowledge of relevant drugs and non-pharmaceutical patient care aids and ability to prescribe dosages and instruct patients in correct usage.

Ability to use independent judgment and to manage and impart confidential information

Ability to maintain quality and safety standards.
